Myself I really did become disollusioned with religion. The whole God is good and if you follow a life suffering and obedience to him will lead to happiness in the ever after. Just couldnt get my head around it.

Thing that really annoys me is the fanatical blind and ignorant following of it all. The main reason being that each religion likes to take the moral high ground to be better than the next one. A case in example being the current tension between the christian world and the muslim world. If either of them had any bloody common sense they would realise that both the stories are the same in a very general way. Maybe I am generalising too much.

Yet it does do some good though. When people are in times of need and assistance they can turn to God as a tower of strength and inspiration.

I dont beleive in GOD as such but I suppose I follow a spiritual life

Just one case of why i disagree with religion as a whole, though maybe being a jedi isn't so bad.

A friend of mine met this girl at college. They both care for eachother. She gave my friend a gift. This gift was hers from her father as a child, a beautiful necklace. Why did she give this to my friend? Because she couldn't get together with him. Why is that? Because my friend is of an ethnic minority, and her religion frowns upon interracial relationships. My friend chose not to keep the gift in the end.

To me, religion has far too many cons outweighing the pros.
I see people praying with boundless faith, they pray and pray for a better life, all they receive is suffering. Maybe that view's ultra simplistic, but that's how i see it.

I'm an atheist. Completely. I don't believe in anything religious or 'spiritual'.

However I'm quite tolerant about other peoples' beliefs these days. It used to rile the fuck out of me but I'm more chilled and mature now

I think that has far more to do with politics than religion. Just because certain people take advantage of religion does not make it evil in itself.

I'm not 100% certain if there is a God or not....but in my mind it makes no difference if there is or isnt.

I don’t follow any religion as I have noticed a lot of hipocrites in most relgious communities....

There is also the tendancy to make use of religious text to substantiate peoples actions which to my mind are not very spiritual

I really dont mind if people follow a religion. Thats up to them and if they are happier for it then so be it.

Is this because you can feel death creeping up on you and are frightened, or because of other things?

Also, I read this on another forum the other day. I thought it summed up my view of religion pretty well (except I don't actually love any of that)

I love racism. It helps people kill each other. I also love injustice, sexism, and cannibalism. And don't forget religion. Religion is all of those combined.

It's more because there's so much crap in the world it would be nice to think of something benevolent up there. And yeah, when you die it would be nice to know there is "something else".
Ive spent most of my life saying "trust in mankind, don't look to god's and external influences" . But really, mankind is the Most self-pitying, obsessive, selfish collection of cunts there is.

Dont treat teenage unmarried mothers as pariahs, and somehow there will be a greater understanding, and no more school girl pregnancys. Bollocks will there. Just less council houses for people with jobs thats all.

I know what you mean. You see so much shit and wonder whether or not someone is up there, and you just sort of hope there is despite the fact you've spent your life believing there isn't. I can say I've done it too, I always wonder if my life would have been easier and certain things hadn't happened if I had God leading the way.

But then you see the amount of trouble religion causes and I just appreciate my solitary independence that I get from being an atheist.
