but no, i dont beleive in ghosts. ive spent time in a cathedral at midnight on my own, in several graveyards, forests and so on that if ghosts existed id have been bound to bump into one by now.

Ima stick with science until someone can show me conclusive proof of anything otherworldly.

Yes.

I used to see one in my room untill I was about 7 or 8, and other people have come to my house and seen the same one.

Once my mum walked into her room, and her sowing machiene pedal moved up and down by itself (thats the bit your supposed to move btw).

There have been a few other examples that I can't remember, I also believe in "paranormal abilities" in people, and know some people that have them.

"The super-natural is simply the natural that hasn't been explained yet" <-- my opinion on the "paranormal".

im more inclined to believe ghosts and paranormal activity are 'things' from a higher dimension that somehow gained the ability to mingle in ours rather than your dad nanna floating about knocking shit over.

It's a shame that the ghosts and paranormal phenomenons disappear whenever someone with a bit of science shows up ;/

Isn't that a paranormal phenomenon itself? :)

I have never seen a ghost and though I would have liked to believe people go on in some form I had always logically discounted it until I had experience of what must be the opposite of ghosts - spirits of the unborn.

I didnt 'see' anything but I felt something pass through me who's closest analogy would be to an electric shock and I was filled with an awareness that the spirit was that of a girl or a boy - I have experienced this with both of my children but I still do not understand it even after 5 years of pondering it. (Sorry - this isnt a fantastic description of what happened but we dont really have the words for it - the experience has changed me tho - for the better I hope.)

It opens up so many questions - if we posess spirits that are not just a simple part of our biological existence then we may well go on beyond death.

It has made me re-examine my attitudes to many things - not least abortion - would it not be ironic if the religious right in the US that have always opposed abortion were right?!!

I have no answers only questions...

well apparently evil spirits can be born of your spunk that didnt impregnate someone.

my room is coverd in it and i havent had any unusual activity.

I dont think so - poltergeists are always associated with a person - its a haunting of an individual rather than a place - they nearly always seem to be linked to teenage girls and some hypothesise that its actually some sub-conscious psychic power.

ive never seen anything like that i dont believe, i dont disbelieve, if it happens then woo it happens... how is my believing in anything going to change things? (also this is my opinion of religion).

So what if theres ghosts or aliens or whatever, they never did anything to me.. the ones that have are real live people so rather than being all scared of a ghost I'll stick to being scared of humans ta.

now excuse me im off to watch outie have a tommy whilst on the loo and really screw his day up Muwahahaha!

I was doing parapsychology as part of my psychology degree some years ago. Nice subject tbh, but leaves a lot open to interpretation regarding the paranormal and alot of inconclusive results :E

It probably stems from an inability to grasp the concept that when you die, you stay dead. People cant imagine "not existing". So they make up things like the afterlife, and ghosts and beyond the grave shiz to try and explain it. Bit crude but hey, it got us where we are today.

Religion was supposed to cover that shiz, Maybe people are swapping religion for Ghost stories so they can do bad shit still have an afterlife.

people give things they cant explain names,
give enough time more and more phenomenon are labelled the same, hence the term ghost is a pretty broad spectrum, in the dictionary
the soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons.
(sometimes initial capital letter) a spiritual being.
the principle of life; soul; spirit.

But i digress, i could come up with something like above mirroring "why do so many people not believe in ghosts?" but thats not here nor there.
Back on topic,

I personally am neither here nor there, i beleive something exists, if people want to call it a ghost *shurg*. I brought this up when we were discussing the existance of a soul, but i will re-itterate it;
Anyone remember:
energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one form of energy into another form of energy
Yep, that was Albert Einstein.. this is a very interesting theory because if indeed this is the case then when we die what happens to the electrical activity in the brain? it cant be destroyed, so it cant simply stop.

Well one theory is that when ou are alive the inside and outside of your cells hold a posotiy or negative charge, these ions (mostly NA, K, Cl or Ca) are all over the membrane that binds the cells together. THe charged ions continually try to flow back to neutral but are kept seperate through metabolic energy. When this energy is no longer available, i.e. you are dead, the cells flow back together reaching neutral. As a result a EKG is no longer able to detect electrical activity in the brain, therefore there is no longer an electrochemical gradient, which means ou are now clinically dead.
The problem isnt that we know what happens (in theory) when we die, the problem is that we cant detect where the neutral energy goes.
After all back to the point at hand, energy cannot be destroyed.

This is what some people believe is the makeup of our "soul" or "spiritual being",
Thomas Edison believed that a persons energy would be released after death, he refrerred to it as "Life units", furthermor he beleived these "life units" were microscopic particles which could arrange themselves into any form, and were indestructable (energy is formless and cant be destroyed)
therefore it could be measured.
He spent the last years of his life making a machine which could allow communcation with the "souls" of the dead, unforutunately he didnt finish it as it would have been interesting to see what he came out with.

The main characteristics by ghost hunters which are used to find ghosts are:
1) Electromagnetic field
2) Unexplained Temperature variatons
There is actually a bit of scientific relevance behind this,
1) if indeed a ghost is neutral energy, it will have a electomagnetic field therefore would show up on a EMF devie as everything emits a electromagnetic energy. The EMF device reads the fluctuations of this energy.
Equally however as everything emits EM energy the room for interference is pretty high

2) Unexplained temperature varations
Fluctuations of more than 10 degrees have been reported in small areas of rooms with constant temparatures,
the science supporting the energy theory is that because the "element" (for lack of a better word) is neutral it will absorb any charged ions around it,
this means heat creating "cold spots".

I purposfully left light out, some people claim that absorbing the posotively charged light ions gives the "glowing" effect,
but i cant see how this works,
e=mc^2
In order to reflect or emit light you need matter, if ghosts are just neutral charged then where does the matter come from.
Secondly alot of energy is needed to spontanously create light.
I dont know about the affect of neutral particles absorbing light, someone more learned will have to shed light on that but thats the way i understand it at least

Sceintific explanation for ghosts are that its all in the mind, however it has been proven that in some situations where ghosts are believed to exist there have been fluctuations in the EM field, aswell as significant temperature drops.
I personally believe 90% of ghost stories are crap, and i definitely dont beleive the garbage on tv. However the 10% that have question marks above their names do make me raise a eyebrow, i dont necessarily believe in it, but i dont disbelieve in it either.

Remember 20 years ago science thought it was impossible for there to be off-world life, now look at us. Just because you cant explain it doesnt mean it does exist, equally just because science cant proove it doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

Edit: Correct any points i have made if i have got it scientifically wrong i posted according to how i understood it

It is true the nerve cells holds this chemical potential. This potential here is released and rebuild every time a signal passes through the nerve cell (it's actually the signal itself that the potential is destroyed). So all the time throughout your life this chemical potential is destroyed. But according to that theory when you die and that potential is lost it should be emitted as a ghost somehow. But the logical problem behind this is that you'd be emitting ghosts throughout your whole life if that theory should be true. Another problem is that the potential energy is easy to account for. Whenever its released it emits some energy im form of the waves you measure in a EKG, and the rest of the energy is absorbed as heat. And all the energy is 100% accountable for.

While it is very true that energy (or matter for that sake) can't be destroyed, you also have to know what happens with energy once its there. Energy doesnt take on an orderly appearance, such as a glass of water where the bottom is cold and the top is warm. Thats not a stable environment. The hot and the cold water mix. This is because of entropy. Entropy is a measure of chaos. Energy want to change to a state of more (total)disorder. Imagine a bouncing ball. Every time it bounces it looses energy to the surroundings (the ball looses a little energy to the floor as heat). You have never seen the opposite to occur: the floor cooling down making the heat energy into motion energy to make the ball jump up and down.

And thats what would happen to the 'ghost' energy emitted by a person - it would simply dissipate. At least if its a kind of energy you wanted to explain with science.

So really to conclude id say that if you try to explain weird events with science, you'd get some pretty straight answers like: The air cooled off because of airflow or another physical event (theres actually alot of fun physical ways to cool down stuff, with lasers and such for example).
Or like we can measure electromagnetic fields here would get an answer like this: well of course, theres wires with current running through down under our feet.

when the body dies the physical energy may remain until each particle has reached its neutral value... where does the energy go... i believe it is simply absorbed into other particles as everything must have a +- charge to exist ie all particles ie everything is made up from some kind of particle.

ps. i hate to try and disprove a truly remarkable effort to bring to light something that i would like to see more people thinking about and i hope that people will read this and explore new avenues into the "paranormal" maybe then we can come to understand what does happen to us after death.

Exactly, in the norm it would dissipate.. but normally we dont all turn into ghosts :p. Surely given enough focus such as trauma (the commonly believed characteristic of when a person turns into a ghost)it would be emited at a far greated rate than it would normally i.e. when cells die rapidly as when a cell dies there is no more electrochemical energy, therefore no more barrier between the posotive and negative ions. Given enough cells dying in rapid succesion and the right conditions, surely is feasible that they are released in enough quantity to create a electromagnetic field?

In terms of your ball example, i would say at a sstretch instead of the ball bouncing and the heat it demited when hitting the floor dissipating it hit it another 100 times, the heat would be focused on that same spot making that spot hot

So really to conclude id say that if you try to explain weird events with science, you'd get some pretty straight answers like: The air cooled off because of airflow or another physical event (theres actually alot of fun physical ways to cool down stuff, with lasers and such for example).
That would suggest a certain ammount of malice, or deciet if you will, for the moment at least i am assuming those reports are true otherwise we would be here all week :p

Or like we can measure electromagnetic fields here would get an answer like this: well of course, theres wires with current running through down under our feet.
Wires running through the floor usually have a fairly regular EM reading, unless there is someone in the other room turning swutches on and off this has no relevance really.
I did mention in my initial post they play a factor, but what people look for are significant differences to the rest of the room

Dont get me wrong, im sure in most cases there is a logical explination, but most the things dis-prooving ghosts i read before making my post seem to be clutching at straws

Unfortuntaley this is one field people wont spend money to investigate fully and with no bias, and the ones who do investigate it have very one-sided arguments making it damn difficult to get any descent view on it tbh, i cant remember the website but my favorite was along the lines of

"ghosts dont exist because why would they want to stay on earth when they can go to heaven"
