Thinking about this one during the run up to Christmas. I mean, how many so-called Christians actually treat this as a religious holiday or as an excuse to get bladdered.

Or all those neo-nazis celebrating the birth of thier "Lord", yet the fact Jesus was Jewish....

Me, personally I dont think there is anything, was just a way to explain phenominom in the past and was a way for the Church to control the masses.

Discuss!

the majority of the world is cristian, as a result many countrys celebrate x-mas

if your not cristian you shouldn't celebrate it, end of! by taking part you ARE cristian...

its just a greeting card company scam tbh

christmas is, to me, a family occasion. we all meet up, eat a lot more food than we need to (or even want to! 'oh just another few spuds wont kill you' 'ok mum..'), exchange gifts, and then get drunk.
it's not a religious occasion. nothing religious to me about the day.

same tbh... when I'm stuffing my face for the second time I don't spend time thinking about some stupid retard kid in Bethlehem, that was only born because Mary forgot to take her pill. Immaculate conception indeed.

You forgot the dirty whore was sleeping with God when she was with Joseph.

Plus, the innkeeper should have been lynched for being a capitalist pig and renting out the rooms, gogo communism! :p

Mary wasn't even with Joesph when she got up the duff iirc*, he only married her so that she wouldn't get stoned to death and God in the form of an angel told him too. Or something..

*may not actually be true!

no it isn't

and besides which it isn't even a true Christian event, it is a pagan festival, Jesus was born in April. anyone who says only Christians should celebrate Christmas needs to do a little research :)
Its the same with Easter, the pagan festival of rebirth which is why we have eggs.

Anyway, Christmas has nothing to do with god imo, its for getting together with your family and friends and ending the year.

ive never celebrated christmas as a religious holiday i wasnt raised in a religious house christmas to me is all about giving and sharing... and snarfing all the choc's off the tree but redoing the foil wrapper so it looks as if the choccy is still in there.

just as easter for me is about giving the person i care about a small gift and watching crappy movies, i also celebrate halloween but im not a pagan lol.

I'm not a very sober person. Hell, i might be the biggest boozer in these here forums. But that's mostly 'cause i likes ta drink and me drinks like me! Har!

Anywya, x-mas is the only time of year i don't touch any booze at all. Never have, never will. A celebration with family has no room for booze.

Not that i spend it like "oh me oh my i have to love my family". Fek no. I spend it like any other insane person, eating too much and getting pretty things in prettier boxes.

Though i hate the bloody add-ons...jinglebells on every store...santa copies on every street corner...overpriced choccies on every shelf...rararbuabrualru....

Anywya, my two cents. Oh and to top it off....when will people learn that the bloody christians ain't the only religion(yes, this is another topic about them) and there are religions that have been around for faaaaar longer :kissit:

I treat it as a religious holiday since I am a Christian :) I know Jesus wasnt born in December and that the Christians just stole the pagan holiday, but even still - its a day which the Christian callender sets aside for celebrating the birth of Jesus. But on top of that too, I love Christmas just for getting together with my family and old friends for a laugh! I dont like the over-comercialisation tho :(

I dont mind non-Christian people having fun at Christmas either, because I know over time its evolved into something more than just a religious holiday. But I wish people wouldnt say "Jesus has nothing to do with Christmas", after all Christmas means "The celebration of the Christ". Its like someone coming to your birthday party and telling you that you have no part in the celebration :) We can join in the festivities of someones party even if we dont know (or believe?) them.

Hey Thad: Although Jesus was Jewish - Christians believe he is the saviour of the world, for Jew and Gentile :) So its ok to say that, just not ok to claim exclusive rights over him!

In terms of currently practising religions Hinduism is the oldest, Juadiam competes (both under 4000 years old though.) Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Jainism are both about 2500 years old. None of which in the scheme of things are particually older.
And if anyone bleats on about paganism being older, modern paganism is in general less than 100 years old and bears no relation to any form of traditional worship.

Jesus was also a prophet in the Jewish and Muslim religions. In the Muslim faith he was second only to Mohammed as a prophet. Which is cool because we get the day off here :)

The difference is Christians believe he was the Messiah, son of God. Other religions say prophet......

Wow 75% non believers, hell will be filled up at this rate ;)

I like vacations. If the vacation is based in some obscure religion or other, I'll happily celebrate it, even though I don't support religion of any kind. Days off are always welcome from the everyday hum-dum. :)

My views on religion are simple:

a) Faith is just that. It is accepting something supernatural as true, eventhough there is no proof for it. It is like believing your neighbour when he tells you there is life on Mars. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. You can't prove it either way.

b) If there is such a creature as God, he's doing a piss poor job of managing humans. Free will is great, but if you let your children kill each other over wether to believe (in) a parent or not, you really do suck as a parent.

c) Is there a God? Are there Gods? Perhaps there are powerful beings who are watching us. Our science is only barely scratching the surface of what is possible - we've only been at it for a few thousand years. On our existance as homo sapiens of roughly 100K years (and I'm generous here), that's a fraction. The universe has been around for, what, 4,000,000,000 years? It is not at all unlikely there have been races before us who are further ahead of us on the science ladder and have long since left, or gone to dust. All I know is that the word 'God' is a human invention, as is the thought behind what 'God' is. It seems a tad unlikely that the occurances on this planet in the last few thousand years have anything to do with the existance of the universe as a whole.

d) Religion is a PERSONAL thing. It is something YOU believe in. Forcing it on others (though wars, governments or law) is arrogant and wrong... even if you think your religion is the best thing since sliced bread.

And finally.. if you are religious, nothing of the above will sway you anyway. It is a matter of faith, after all... ;)

Just a wee correction - Jesus wasnt a prophet to the Jews. Some believe he was a great Rabbi that went a bit crazy, but they dont hold him to be of any spiritual significance.

afaik 25th december was the day to mark the middle of winter but the jebus crew took it over and called it the day that jebus was born.

21st december is the pagan festival, shortest day of the year.

Yes, I expect that christmas is a "replacement" of the winter solstic too ^^
But hell, who these days treats it as a religious thing? Its a lovely couple of days with my family and presents and yummy food. I wasn't brought up much religious anyway.

And I'd be suprised if Jesus was Christian, I mean that religion was based around his death and resurrection, it would take real forsight of the future to become a christian before than happened.
