Well got convinced into re-doing the bathroom, badddd idea. Firstly our house is ancient, one of those victorian jobbies.
Secondly the stuff behind the plaster has all but disintegrated into a soil like substance in the bathroom.

I firstly Retiled the tiles which luckily was easy for once.

We had a leak in the roof about a year ago where some tiles had come off and had made the bathroom paint all peel, Well I then deceided to removed some of this peeling paint from the ceiling for a recoat which promptly decided that it had had enough and a part of the ceiling would crumble, so I have my 1st hole about 6inch x 4inches in the ceiling.
Then tried the wall, more holes. finaly i give up after making 3 huge holes in the bathroom.
The thing about this room it that you have a layer of paint, a layer of plaster and a layer of the soil substance!!!, and then nothing!!!! just space. So there is me filling the holes with loads of plaster just hoping it will stay.

Started a 10 this morning and its now 6 and i still haven't finished. The holes are drying out, and tiles gouted. and the floor boards preped for a layer of that beech replica clip together stuff. Next time we call people in to do it for us, cause i cant be arsed.

First, treat the entire sealing with a stainblock, maybe even acid wash it first. Board over with plasterboard, stainblock, prime, paint.

Job done :>

Aye, if you're gonna do a job, do it properley - Botching it will save you an extra days work now, but in the long run will give you more headaches.

Do the ceiling with plasterboard, plaster over, but don't worry too much about getting it all smoothe. Then, Artex the ceiling - It looks fancy, and means you don't have to spend ages on the plastering.

be careful, you might find a pair of Stars and Stripes boxers behind the plaster :D

If the stuff behind the walls is really that bad I'd be tempted to rip it out, if it's not supposed to be loadbearing. Then baton and plasterboard the lot. If its knackered, probably the damp atmosphere in the bathroom, it could get a lot worse.
I speak from experience of old clapped out houses :)
So last time we bought a brand spanker, ah bliss......
