Xbox 360 DivX/XviD Playback Tested (Verdict: It's Almost Perfect)

I have personally been playing around with it for the last hour, has played back everything I thrown at it perfectly so far!

big question is tho, will that do it? tought alot of questions were left out after reading that artikle, but will I be able to stream straight from my network without any speciall programs progams on the computor and without having to do any changes to the 360 it self

You can stream straight from Windows Media Player 11, no transcoding required. You just connect your network up, set the 360 look on the network for files and it just works.

I don't want to stream through the mediaplayer, I want to be able to stream straight from a harddrive like I can do with the old xbox, as I run a couple of networkdisks where I keep all my stuff I don't want to be forced to turn on a computor in order to be able to see or listen to what I have on them

Well Microsoft can't really be blamed for not configuring it like that because everyone has different networks and settings. XBMC is highly customiseable through it's config files but Microsoft cannot open up the 360 that way for security reasons. The best you can hope for is that Microsoft add support for some kind of fileshare interface over the network but I honestly don't see that happening as there is already a number of viable ways to watch these videos on your 360. One thing is for sure, it will never be as customisable or elegant as XBMC because Microsoft will not allow third parties to have access to the system. We are stuck with whatever Microsoft offer us and luckily enough what they have just delivered us is enough for 95% of users, sadly people with more advanced needs such as yourself may be in for a long wait to get the missing features that you require.

You could prolly run a linux distro on a ps3 and run it from there

well, thats not a 360 now is it?

not gonna go and buy a ps3 to do the job my old xbox is doing for me, I was just hoping I could put one console away, but looks like both xboxes will stay up still, funny how usage time on my xboxes is like 90% on the old one ^^;

You didnt mention you wanted to specifically use a xbox,
either way im happy with my media pc

which doesnt do what you want and you were incinuating you wanted to replace the xbox, but we can be pedantic all day so i suggest we leave it at that

you can play stuff off the hdd but involves voiding your warranty and cant be discussed on this forum

How well does it handle x264 at high resolutions (aka HD)

If it's mkv, it won't play.

i cant seem to get it working properly, it scales it to 420p? (normal res) even on divx copies

Also, there's a massive lack of a playlist option available, hope they add it.

Erm no idea bud. What is the native res the file was encoded at? Perhaps the 360 is choosing the nearest available resolution to scale to? Alot of divx rips are never done properly and they botch the resolution, if the file isn't a DVD standard resolution the 360 might not scale it properly. That is all I can think of at the moment but I have tried some of my own DVD rips and they play perfectly but they are not upscaled as I get a resolution change by the console and it seems to switch to PAL50 or 60 for playback. Not ideal I know but all my films playback fine and the good 1.4gb rips look great, the 700mb rips block up quite a bit though and that happens even on my standalone divx player.

the one i tested was a 1080p blue ray rip, i checked using VLC player and the res is 1920 x 1080,
i did read that the 360 get sconfused easily over formats but i cant find the setting to force a resolution
i tried connecting via VGA and Component,
no biggie really i only hooked it up for a play as i have the media pc hooked up anyway as i was working my way through psychonaughts with the xbox controller plugged in
