If you download the divx codec from divx.com be carefull !

Good heads up.

A good download is:
K-Lite codec pack. It includes DivX5.05. http://www.freecodecs.com/

Personally, I've gone off DivX since the pro/regular split. I'm all for open source codecs. Give Xvid a blast (its in that codec pack). The quality is every bit as good as DivX and totally free.

Another codec to keep an eye out for is Theora - http://www.theora.org/. Another open source codec from the same group that did the wonderful Ogg Vorbis audio compressed codec (http://www.vorbis.com/).

cool, i didnt know there where any descent alternatives for divx under windows (read i am a lazy arse and everytime i need a windws codec i cba to look verry far )

I think you'll find you've downloaded DivX 5 Pro evaluation version, which to be fair, is explicitly defined as ad-ware on the DivX website.

There is a DivX 5 codec only download somewhere there, no ad-ware on that one.
