Advice Disposing of old hard disks?

Having a massive clearout and I've come across about half a dozen hard disks that have been decommissioned through the years. They'll all contain porn, warez, illegal downloads personal data and I'd like to bin them securely.

They'd be bagged up and put in the council's landfill crusher thing, but for peace of mind I'd like to make them unusable. Short of taking a hammer to them, any advice?

Well you can do a long winded secure erase session but then I also find opening them up and sliding them across rough concrete fucks the discs up well...or a hammer.

Yeah you can use something like DBAN to do crazy thorough wiping (up to 35 passes).

Or a hammer. Or put a drill through each one.

Hammer is what I use. Messes them up good.

Scratch them up then stick them in the oven.

Microwave. But be sure to keep the metal case on for extra effect.

I like taking them apart and binning the platters in different places. I also giggle that half the girls in work use the platters from my fairly grotty porn hard drives as coasters. But I do DBAN my disks just in case.

I took a heavy duty electric drill and drilled a hole straight through mine before discarding them.
