Disk drive woes

I bought a new disk drive today (Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 120GB) today, and I'm worried that it was broken on arrival, becuase it makes a lot of noise while reading/writing. My WesternDigital disk is more or less completely silent.

Here's a recording of how it sounds (the Maxtor one, that is):

Should I be worried, or is that just normal noise level for a HDD?

its probably fine

most drives make noise some more than others

just run it a week and check the disk for errors or something

Thanks for the reassurance, but I managed to solve the problem :) There was this application that you could download from Maxtor.com that let you set the disk to work in "silent" mode. That fixed it, and it's quiet as.. something very quiet now.

That should teach me to buy stuff in "bulk". :)

i bet it halved the data rate though. It prolly stepped the rpm down a few notched and did your seek speed up the ass.
