If someone has a disabled badge for their car, are they allowed to park on Double Yellows, 5-10 feet from a mini-roundabout for about 10 mins while waiting to pick up able-bodied children?

No. They still have to obey the laws of the road. AFAIR they are just entitled to park in disabled bays with the badges.

That's what I thought. Just had a go at some old woman that parks her people carrier near the mini-roundabout outside the local school. Finally got fed up with having to try and work my way past her and she tried to tell me that she was allowed to be there.

Will call the council if she's still there next week and get the traffic wardens down to the school.

Surely that's only for yourself if there's nowhere else to park though. Not for picking up able-bodied kids from school?

Well, what I have described was an obstruction, so I think I'm justified in having a go.

Against the law, outright, regardless of condition. Double yellow lines are there for a reason - just because she is disabled doesn't mean she has a right to make someone else disabled for parking like a pranny and protesting innocence.
I'm all for disabled rights, helping the less fortunate through life as easily as possible (I am myself disabled, although not physically) - however this is purely using it as a poor excuse.


Oh and where is that quote from, Whipped? Even if it's from the likes of the Highway Code or DVLA, I'd put money on it being bollocks :/

We parked on one at a traffic light (like 5m from the lights) for loading / unloading (admittedly it was relatively out the way of the main traffic flow). Police said it was fine as long as hazards were on, someone was with the car at all times and we didn't take "too long".

It's one of those laws that will merely chop and change depending on the mood of the official involved. Not all the police are bad thankfully, I've only ever had good experiences with them - however there are always a few bad eggs who quite literally take the letter of the law and won't budge - so god help you if you drive at 31 in that 30 mile an hour zone...

If you feel the person was abusing their Blue badge then report them to the council. The council would probably write them a snotty letter. People picking their kids u from school is a pet hate of mine.

My mum holds a badge, and it is perfectly legal to park on a double yellow line provided you aren't a hazard. Parking right next to a roundabout is just stupid, and is also an abuse of the badge, unless the woman is actually getting out of the car to go anywhere. If she's sat in the car then she clearly has no disabled need to park there.

My biggest annoyance with disabled badges is people who use them when they have no need to, like family members borrowing it etc, not on.

Yes, she sits in the car and reads the paper while waiting for school to kick out.

Best bit is, driving past yesterday, I suddenly realised that she is actually parking right next to the dip in the pavenment that allows genuine disable people to cross the road!!!

So, if a child in a Wheelchair needs to get past her they have to go around 500 yards further down the road to the next crossing.

If she's there again at all this week then I'm taking some photos and writing to the council.

Yes, I already asked her quite nicely not to park there as it's dangerous and that she could park in the car park that is 20 feet to her right or just back down the road a bit.

If you honestly think I started this thread to bash disabled people, you are sorely mistaken. I was just pissed that she is trying to use her disabled status in a way that was totally unacceptable.

I'd say that parking close to any junction makes you a hazard to other road users, and shouldn't be done.

Sounds to me like the sort of person who thinks a blue badge gives them an exemption from traffic laws and that nobody will dare complain. I'd be tempted to drive a bit close and whack her mirror

One day down and no sign of her, but she's not there every day. Still time. Plus, I'm not entirely sure it was a Blue badge. Didn't take much notice, but it could have just been a disabled sign on a White bit of paper.
