I think it depends on what your having.

In my house growing up if you had a main meal at the middle of the day time and a snack/sandwich in the evening it was Dinner and then Tea.

If you have a snack in the middle of the day and a main meal in the evening it became Lunch and dinner/tea

But i am an odd southerner.

Tea is a beverage made from leaves. Nothing more. If you're having egg & chips at 6pm you're not having your tea.. you're having fucking egg & chips at 6pm.

Bloody northerners.

As said previously tea is a drink made from leaves, water and a touch of milk if you choose. and maybe some sugar if you really have to.

Tea is not a meal of any kind - as proven below:

tea - Breakfast - tea - Elevenses + tea - tea - Lunch - tea - Snack - tea - Dinner - tea

But what about if you take your own stuff in to school. Its a packed lunch not a packed dinner.

Therefore main meal in middle of the day is dinner, sandwich in middle of day is lunch. As for evenings it's dinner or tea depending on what your having.

Its doesnt matter what you are eating!!

Its breakfast in the morning
Lunch Midday/Afternoon
And Dinner/Supper in the evening

You can't have Dinner at midday...its called Lunch!!

And the school dinners thing is just mental like everyone else on here mixing up a beverage with something you eat...

What about a tea garden?

You don't sit there having an evening meal!!
You sit and drink tea and eat scones during the day!

That's funny. The workplaces I'v been to say "It's lunchtime now", and the school's used to say "It's lunchbreak/time now", so I don't understand the problem.

What about when yuppies say "Hey! We'll do lunch!" at about 1pm?

And all the kids used to say, "Hey, I've gotta have my dinner now", when their mummies called them in to have their dinner typically after 5pm.

Tea pertains to the drink tea, but has also been used to refer to dinner time, though I'm wondering if this may be class related, and whether lunch is an Americanism. Can't be arsed doing any digging. :p

It's both. And if you're proper posh its only dinner when its more than three courses, otherwise it's supper.

Personally, the mid-day meal was dinner when I was a kid, but its lunch now, but I swap the evening meal title between dinner and tea depending on how northern I'm feeling at any one time, or possibly on what time it is (tea is earlier generally). Oh and for you people saying tea is only a drink, hide in shame for displaying your ignorance. Peasants.

Poll added. Because this needs it.

I'm with Rubric on this one though, it depends on the size of the meal.

Tea time is the time relating to the drinking of tea.
Dinner time is the time relating to the eating of the evening meal.

I think this comes about because northerners were once spending too much on beer to have an evening meal and thus drank tea instead of an evening meal.

Poll is broken.
It asks "what do you call dinner?" when it should ask "what do you call tea?"

OK ??

I notice a lot of northerner bashing going on, yet in the passed few months several polls covering the country on various topics show that in the north you are more likely to be looked after in hospitals, more likely that your local council actually gives a shit and more likely that the people there treat you as a human being regardless of your accent and generally that the people in the north are just fucking better than anyone in the south.

I vote Dinner time is an evening meal and lunch time is in the afternoon.

I call lunch, lunch. Tea is a drink, but teamtime is the snack you have before a proper dinner.

So all the poll options are wrong.

for me its Lunch and dinner, or sometimes supper. It was tea when I was a kid, I was always asked,' what do you want for your tea?' Now, as far as I am concerned, tea is either a drink or a snack in the afternoon, as in AFTERNOON tea.

If you don't understand the poll options, you are too stupid to be allowed an opinion.

Ok the big gun is here now. We have had many discussions on here before about me being right and poncey southerners being wrong, what with their crazy sandwich ideas and ketchup on fucking bacon butties. So to finally end this argument -

Breakfast in the morning.

Dinner at dinner time, usually around 1pm ish.

Tea at tea time, usually around 6pm ish.

Supper at supper time, usually late on and close to bed time.

Anyone who calls dinner lunch is a posh, mincey pleb.

Lunch is a new word that seems to have cropped up since gay marriages became popular possibly because it almost rhymes with spunk, they love their spunk lunches........*runs*

If you consider Crewe part of the North, then I'm inclined to agree with you there Cal. Having been out on the piss with some Northern chicks, they're generally loads more approachable and friendly than Southern birds.

Of course, I'd never live oop north, their accents get on my tits. ;)

You're still wrong about what you call lunch and dinner, though. :)
