hmm. I just bought a bottle of Highland Park 25yo for my bro. Now I want to keep it. It's a pre wedding (his, heh) gift. Shall I get him to call it off so I can drink his bottle in peace, or shall I give it away like a good brother should?

hmm :)

Give me the highland park next week. That way you will not have to agonise over drinking a gift intended for your brother. I will do it for you.

the HP only costs about a third of the comparable one you name though. I've not yet had it though, so I couldn't say if it was worth it ;)

im not an expert on the terms you use like peat and moss and horse shit etc.
i can tell you its a bit like laphroaig with chocolate in it.
dogs bollocks is the expert term i would use.

Give it to him, but don't give it to him. Arrange to go see him, take the bottle and two glasses, then drink as much as you can!

it's pretty hefty stuff. completely different to the 18 imo. though I made a mistake in having it neat imo, it's a high cask strength and reading up the experts claim it's at it's best with a couple of drops of water.

though I'm thinking it must be 33 now, as it's a 25yo, and the bottle says it was bottled in 2000. Anyone know?

It won't change after it went into the bottle so if it's 25 when it goes in it's still 25 now. All the changing / aging takes place in cask before bottling.

A few good whisky resources:

Whiskipedia

Whisky Mag - reviews of most whiskies out there.

Whisky Pages

Edit: Oh, and I always try a sip neat first, from there you can decide whether you'd prefer it with water or not.

Edit 2: This is very handy when looking for similar whiskies to one you know:

Whisky Flavour Map - admittedly just diageo products but they do own most brands.

fecking sacrilege that youve left it sitting in a bottle for 8 years.
