OK, this is *really* annoying me now...

I'm using WinME (yes, it sucks), and I have the 'file types' options set so that mp3 files are opened in Winamp, so when I open an mp3 from my HD, winamp fires up.

However, IE5.5 doesn't feel that way. It simply WILL NOT let me open mp3 files online using winamp, and INSISTS on using the shit 'RealOne' that came with windows.

- I would uninstall RealOne, except my dad uses it.

- I've unchecked all the audio-file preferences in RealOne, so it supposedly only opens videos automatically.

- I've reinstalled Winamp. Twice.

I also tried looking up in IE help to see if it has it's own special file preferences, but nothing was found. My only way out is to save the files to a folder and open them from explorer, but it takes longer and I always end up forgetting to delete them.

What's weird is that RealOne also has the option to stream mp3s, yet Winamp always does that for me. It's only opening them from their current locations that causes me grief.

If someone has an idea, please post. If it works I'll close the thread and be done with...

I'm with yer, brother. RealOne is the the only application that actually annoys me. Through it's bloated, ad-saturated existence. I hate the fucker, and as soon as some other application can play legacy .rm and .ram files then this little bastard's getting straight off my hard drive. Little fucker.

I dunno about your problem, though except to say RealOne isn't shipped with Windows and IE doesn't have any official support for it, so your issue lies with RealOne, not IE. Sorry. :(

Although I think we may need it to watch Big Brother 2002. :(

Thanks anyway, summo, & good for you emb.

Ok, I've just realised that IE has saved the mp3 files in the temporary internet folder with new extensions, namely .mpga . RealOne is associated with it, which explains the problem, but now winamp won't auto-open at all, and I'm only given the option of saving to disk when trying to download.

*sigh*

//edit - actually, it looks like IE may not have done the converting, and that RealOne does it automatically so it can play the files in it's own format - even when mp3s aren't assosiated with it. I may be wrong...

Easy. Remove RealOne (never use it myself) and replace it with the free RealPlayer 8. No ads and it does all your RealMedia streaming.

Also, try activating "Winamp Agent" in the Amp preferences, that is supposed to restore file extensions.

That's what I wanted to do all along anyway :)

I just fucked around with the mpga format; I changed the default program in a different way to last time.. it seems to work OK, but if the prob occurs again I'll just hunt down RP8.
