Recently I have had to start manually enabling xp's firewall everytime time I wanted to connect to the net. On turning pc off / rebooting it defaults back to turning itself off.

I had a dig around and on the security tab here I changed the setting from "Advanced" to the "Typical", which seems to keep the firewall on at all times, but I was wondering what the benifits of using the advance settings are, and is using "typical" set to unsecure password a good idea? :/

Update: Xps firewall is still defaulting to "off" after I reboot machine. Any ideas why it won't stay on when I have selected it to remain on?

No specific ideas on that, but I'd recommend using a better firewall anyway. I use Kerio Personal Firewall myself. It also gives some protection again viruses/trojans as it will detect if an executeable has changed (at least when it's one launched by another app).

You *need* the windows firewall off to use such an alternative firewall so it'll neatly sidestep your problem ;).
