I just bought this as it seems like a good laugh. I had a couple of questions.

How do you train/get new spells/skills? I am level 4 atm and dont know how to advance...I increased my dexterity off some menu, was not sure if i can learn new spells myself, or if i require a trainer standing next to me.

I made a char on battlenet with ladder mode off. I made my own server/instance. After saving the gfame to exit, i noticed it said something like

<Char Name>
Necromancer level 4
Expansion pack enabled
This character will expire in 10 days

Expire?????

I think the default key to bring up the skills tree is "T". There you can click on a skill to raise it by one point. You can only get the top row of skills in each tree until you hit level 6, at which point you can get the next tier IF you have the prereq skills.

Also note that you can never respec your skills.. so be very sure you want it before you spend points in it, unless you just spend 1 point in it as a prereq. Each skill has a max level of 20, which means you can spend points in it 20 times, but only once per level. Items can give boni to the skills too.

Good luck and have fun! It's a lovely game. :)

As for expire.. characters normally expire in 90 days if you haven't played them in between. But at lower levels they expire quicker.. just keep playing it and eventually that message will go away. :)

You characters expire if you don't wrap them in clingfilm and keep them in the fridge.

When you "level up" there should also be 2 red buttons to click on at the bottom of the screen that will let you access the leveling up options..

Like has been mentioned you can never ever ever respec your skills, so what you choose your stuck with forever..

You need to play your char (well have him logged into a game, you can leave him there while you go for dinner if you wish) for 2 hours in the first 2 weeks or it will vanish, then I think at least log him on once every 90 days. It was done because since creating an account is free, people could make 8000 chars in a day therefore taking every possible combination of names.

The 2 red buttons Golena is talking about are above the chracter bar at the bottom if you play in lower res, if higher they will appear in it but as already mentioned the T button is your command for bringing up the skill tree.

What character you playing? Could give more advice if needed.

On the expiry issue, it needs 2 hours of play to become permanent, but if you don't have the time at the moment, just logging the character in for a few seconds will reset that expiry to 11 days, even if you only had a day left or whatever.

I started playing D2 again a couple of months ago and I have an 83 sorceress and 81 paladin fully equipped if you need help with anything, might have some spare stuff on my 5 mules, just give me a bell.

I'm a Necro at the moment. I know how to summon a pet, yet they run off on their own seeking trouble. I just seem to 1-2 hit things with my staff (lvl 4 atm) so tonight I will try and spec in the hope learning a spell.

lol how many levels are in this game? Also are Druids good at combat, or a more typical healer class

Goes up to 99, but it's a damn slow grind after 80 unless you're in bigger games.

Druids are more whacky whacky if you go summoning and shapechanging and spellcasting for elementals, to be honest, the whacky whacky is more fun as if you wanted spells there's better classes for it.

As any char it's hard to do all three lines, your choice of lines as a necro are thus:

Summoning - the pet line. You can overload with skeles's but later on they get munched quick but are pretty good early on, though skeletal mages work at range which is nice. Golems are nice, many go with clay golems even though they're not top because they can take punishment etc. but I like fire ones. You can also revive dead monsters to fight on your side which is nice.

Poison/Bone - this is the damage line and only the middle line and bone armour are good, damage chucking with teeth (shit, don't put much in) early on. Then corpse explosion which is good but area starts off small, bone spear is good and bone spirit is too and a good point to note is they past through so dmagae a few in a row in the case of spear and spirit. Bone armour is your standard damage absorption so you will want points in it as you can recast it to get it back to full health.

Curses - great for weakening enemies but be careful as they don't stack so choose carefull, personally I only like a few such as amplify damage, life tap and decripify - the ones that make enemies move away or confuse them aren't killing anything and are quite crap.

Combo's are:

Summon and curse - get your pets to whack em down as you weaken them

Summon and poison/bone - pets hold em off while you blast em down, can cost lots of mana but can be effective

Poison/bone and curse - weaken and blast

Any which way you do it, you'll always want some summoned pets with points in their masteries to stave off many enemies.

I would also suggest you look at what are called synergies, if you look at your spell tree you will see some spells help later spells and vice versa, so if you think you want to spend points to help you now, make sure they might help you with spells you will use later, for instance:

Bone spear (lvl 30) gets bonuses from and points you've put in Teeth (lvl 1) and Bone Spear (lvl 18). When you hover over them with your cursor in the skill tree you'll see the available bonuses.

The thing is D2 is different in that you could find yourself not struggling and doing ok at anyone time, so hold back skill and attribute points until you need them, for instance, if you feel you are beginning to run out of mana too quickly, a few more energy, you want a few more defence, dex etc. Don't out em in if you don't need em because you'll never get them out. You might also find some great armour that needs just a few more str early on, so hold back there if you can.

Hope all this helps rather than confuses!! :)

Thanks Kiliarien you're a great help :)

I planned to be a pet orientated necro so its a little worrying to hear they get owned pretty quick. You seem like you've played most of the classes...I mainly want to be able to survive when things get busy/difficult. Is the necro the wrong class?

I doubt I will ever fight against human players (not even sure if you can), so i only really need to be good against mobs.

No a necro summoner can do quite fine against tougher mobs, it's just sometimes skeletons (the basic ones) that can get owned, that said, there are plenty of corpses to animate and golems do the job quite nicely too so don't fear about the class. The game is quite balanced and all classes have their weaknesses and strengths, there is no 'uber' class just depends on your playstyle, I have a friend who is lvl 50 with his necro as summon/curse and his skele's are still munching through stuff!

You do need to get some good necro stuff when you can, might have stuff lying about though I have had some freebie sessions recently and given a lot away - at the very least I have several million gold to help. If you PM me your account I can try and find you in game (my acc name is same as it is here: kiliarien) so feel free to holler and see if I'm on as I'm non-ladder too :D

Necros rely on pets for killing in later difficulty since a great deal of monsters are indeed magic immune :)

Max out Skeletal Mastery and Raise Skeleton along with Summon Resist (summon resist will help your pets live longer vs higher bosses etc) no need to max out summon resist tho :) only put about 4-5 points into it the rest you will gain from items.

Also Clay golem is nice to have - his hits slow enemies slightly + monsters attack him before they attack you normally he's like a little aggro magnet lol (no need to put alot of points into him just a few and some into golem mastery and you be set)

Also make sure you have the following (u only need level 1 in curses btw) Amplify Damage and Decrepify.

Amplify Damage I used this vs most things I only used Decrepify on bosses really or monsters that you simple don't want to catch you like the little stygian dolls later on.

Edit: its also nice to have Blood Golem btw as your Clay Golem will benefit from it - the Clay Golem gains more level for every level of Blood Golem you have (just get level one blood golem you will gain a fair few levels of it from items later)

Really? I didn't remember monsters could be immune to the "magic" damage type, as in Bone Spear, Bone Spirit etc? Then again it's a while since i played a necro. :)

pfft, if you want a -real- necro, don't update the game and max out all the pet-summoning/reanimating skills!

especially funny in a full game of all-pet necros :]

Yes I'm afraid they can. The most annoying beastie to come across for me is a cold/fire/magic/phys immune that is aura enchanted. My pally still rocks their world as he deals all 5 'magical' damage types at once using famine with a couple of poison charms :D

And Cylian, all those pets! Lol LAG-Alert!!

There was a Necro guild called "Men In Lag".

this is 'just' skeletons, no reanimated. And check the map in the upper left ;)

its really tough to get started again when youve got nothing/ladder is reset.
gets a bit repetitive as well, thats why i started trying out gimpy builds. the bnet community is shit as well so its either a love or hate it thing I guess.

That's the main reason I always struggle when I play it now. The BNet community used to be great (at least on HC) but since the early days it's changed into a korean shopping forum and finding decent people to play with is almost impossible. That and the inevitable feeling of having done everything in the game already ofc.
