I really needed to be sure about what dexterity does to casting speed, so I tested it myself.

I had no +casting speed items during testing.
Spell I used to calculate the effect was 3s casting time.

case1:
=============
Dexterity: 292
Casts: 315
Time(s): 629
Time/Cast: 1.9354

case2:
=============
Dexterity: 354
Casts: 376
Time(s): 635
Time/Cast: 1.6888

So the difference in dexterity in those cases was 62.
Procentual increase in casting speed was 12.74%

To round this down a bit, every 10 of dexterity increases casting speed by 2%. I can not be sure the effect is linear but still :)

so in other words.. more dex and more casting speed equals faster cast times? eh.. did know that before, and were you bored while figuring that out?

aand.. I think I've read that some other numbercrunchers on VN has already done those tests..

he quoted some figures from mythic/goa in a post a few days back, after conducting these tests he has found the information supplied to be incorrect, thus he has made a post to show his findings to the daoc community...

Even though everybody knew the hard facts already and posting this is totally useless, I would like to add some tiny bit of calculations I did just for my own pleasure. Some in VN sure have mentioned this before but until this moment I was not 100% sure.

Hard cap in casting speed is 1 second (atleast so is believed). To reach this with spiritmasters 2.5s lifetap, you need 60% faster casting. 10% from faster casting items and the rest comes from dex. If the speed continues linear with increased dexterity, you will hit that 1 second casting speed with 386 dexterity.

Well Im not reading EVERYTHING there is to know about DAoC, but I kinda know most of it. Nice to know my goal is around 386 dex.
So thx for posting this :)

This effects absolutely nothing and most dont even care, but I feel like I must correct my typo.

case1:
=============
Dexterity: 292
Casts: 325 (accidently put 315 here)
Time(s): 629
Time/Cast: 1.9354

You can't test the effect on casting speed like this.
Firstly, the speed at which the game actually runs on the server (how fast time passes in the DAoC universe) varies by a significant amount. I've personally measured fluctuations of over 30%. 15% is no exception. Basically that means that you can be casting 15% faster without anything changing on your character.

Furthermore, the dexterity effect is definitely not linear. I've done some rather extensive testing with dexterity effect and TOA cast speed bonuses, but even after correcting for the forementioned speed fluctuations it was impossible to come up with an accurate formula based on my data.

When I did these tests I was trying to obtain solid data on effectiveness of cast speed% vs dex, but I can't say I can definitely conclude anything but "more dex is better" and "more cast speed% is better" :)
