They don't know what year it is. When humans blotted out the sun and then lost the AI war, they lost track of time. If memory serves correctly (and it is prone to fail, so tell me if i'm wrong) don't the humans believe it's 3000 and something??

Anyway, the only part in 'our' time is within the Matrix itself, as humans were most 'comfortable' in the late 90's.

So, the plot is the future, and the 'fantasy world' is now...
