I will let you know Embattle, that I can fly that chopper perfectly, and the Huey. All I use is the keyboard and mouse, works fine.

/me pokes Embattle with a cattle prod for suggesting such an awful thing ;)

First time I used that thing I kept losing control. All the little kiddies will be excited now that they have something to kill their team-mates over :p

6 minutes until DLed. I'm not sure if I even want to play it. Seems rather bad taste.

Oh well. I guess I will anyway.

I've mastered the choppers now, nothing like hovering over an enemy flag and capturing it while your gunner sprays everyone with bullets.

I can even land to re-arm and pick people up :), only crash I had yesterday was when I landed on the runway and some fool decided he was gonna take off in the tank buster and try to fly through me.

The scud missiles are great as well.

Steiny - I'm with you on the bad taste thing. Seems a little off that we're all playing a game that now names the allies as the Coalition. It's a little in bad taste from the modders to use it while we're at war still.

Mind you the same argument could be said for all the other war games available.

Oh well.

the version on the FTP is the latest release, did you download the full program or the patch?

Also is your BF1942 game patched to the latest version?.

I uninstalled BF1942 and deleted the BF1942 directory, I then reinstalled it all and then installed the DC mod....seemed to do the trick.

Funny - but...

I downloaded it last night and had a go. Helicopters are tricky, I'm going to have a practice a LOT more. I actually found the planes easier to fly than the WWII types (particularly the A10 and the Frogfoot), but the two biggest problems are the maps and the BF engine itself; the maps are just too small and don't work when you can jump all over the map in a helicopter (basically everyone just base rapes the enemy), so some bespoke maps are a must. The other prob is the BF engine - its physics are based around WWII era weapons, which basically means ballistic. Modern era weapons are often guided and I don't think the BF engine has a way of dealing with this. Example - the only air defence you have is fixed or tracked AA guns; what you need are SAMs because otherwise the game is even more air-dominated than some the BF maps. The game gets a bit tedious when you can't get out of your base because you've got Apaches and Blackhawks hovering above you at your base blowing the crap out of you and you HAVE to spawn at that base because that's either the only one left or the only one with any AA.

Oh, and while the AC130 is a hoot, I shot it six times last night a point blank with a T-72 and it STILL didn't blow up.

Having said all that, I still fancy another go tonight :)

It is possible using the current engine to make lock on missiles, some clever code monkey has found a way. Although the code is a 'closely guarded secret', I doubt (unless the DC team come up with something similar), will appear in DC.

I stand corrected. From the 'Secret Weapons' blurb:

Secret Weapons brings the total of playable vehicles in the game to 46. In addition to the 30 vehicles in the original game that includes jeeps, fighter planes, tanks and aircraft carriers, players can operate16 new vehicles including a Horton HO 229 fighter plane that is equipped with a 30 mm machine gun. Other vehicles include a US Sherman tank with a T-34 Calliope (rocket launcher), U.S. Super Heavy Tank, Sturmtiger, Goblin jetfighter, C-47 cargo plane, Armstrong Whitworth AW-52, the German Wasserfall guided anti-air missile and the German Natter rocket plane

So once Secret Weapons is out, Desert Combat may be able to introduce guided missiles of its own.

if you get lock on anti air missiles, then you need lock on air to surface missles for the planes and choppers as well.

As it stands with helecopters and planes its just a point and shoot affair, which means the enemy can move out the way if they see the attack coming. If you have lock on anti air missles it wont matter where the plane goes as the missile will follow it.

So lets make it fair, if one gets lock on missles, then both get them, as it stands the choppers and planes are not super powerful, I played on many servers last night and while the air support was destructive it is easily taken down by the anti aircraft tanks, and some people seem to have mastered shooting down choppers with tank turrets.

The transport plane is another story, I took that thing as high as it would go and then jumped out, it fell from the sky and landed up the right way without blowing up, I also rammed and destroyed 5 planes and took less than a third damage from it.

Yeah - believe it or not it takes a howitzer to blow it up

jedinays...how are you starting the game?
are you activating it thru normal bf via the custom game screen or via the shortcut in the programs menu.

check the properties of the shortcut and change them to...

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +game DesertCombat +restart 1

...providing you have installed bf to its default location.

see if this helps

I agree with DaGaffer that DC requires new maps.

The new map they included in this release is a good start - although there's no air support, the expansive sandy terrain and burnt out vehicles dotted about, with billowing plumes of black smoke, makes it frighteningly close to what we are seeing on our TV screens!
