For a while now I have needed some cosmetic dental work done and also one dental implant. My NHS highway robber, erm I mean dentist quoted me a price of over £2000 which I consider to be a bleeding ripoff. So, I started looking into dental tourism and Budapest seems to be the place to go. All the top papers have covered this topic and it seems that on average Budapest works out 60-70% cheaper including travel/hotel/food costs than seeing a UK dentist (private or NHS) when it comes to cosmetic dental work. The tabloids and the broadsheets have both stated that the standard of dental work is as high if not higher than top UK dentists, I am struggling to find a reason not to take the plunge to be honest, the work is full guaranteed and they will pay for your return flight costs if any problems arise with the actual work itself.

Ok, so why am I posting this here you ask?

Well, it is estimated that 40,000 people from the UK went abroad to have cosmetic dental work done in the last 12 months, many of them to either Hungary or Poland. What I want to know is does anyone on these forums have experience of doing this sort of thing or do they know anyone who has travelled abroad for dental work because of the costs. I would also like to know if what the papers are saying is true, is the medical and dental care in Hungary as good as I am hearing, is it worth the time and effort going there if I can save around £1000 in the process?

my mum paid £5000 (probably more she wouldn't say much about the cost) to get enamel caps on all her teeth last year, the whole process took about 2 months as well. Was well worth it though, before her teeth were a right state now they look perfect and she feels better about her self too.

over here in New zealand its thailand/china that offer cheap 'tourist' dental/medical care. For more expensive operations it is getting more and more common. If it really is that expensive for your treatment then I think it will be worth it.

You could even do some sightseeing while you are there

Only real downside i can see is that if something does go wrong with the work you had done later its gonna be alot more complicated flying to Budapest to have it fixed, as compared to going to your local dentist.

*composure mode on*

yes the dental tourism industry is booming and i have watched several documentaries/news broadcasts about it there have been many people who have had excellant work done and its really been worth it for them, however there are a few who have had dental work done and not provided the foreign dentists with their full medical notes so the dentist has missed something and they have ended up having to go to a UK dentist anyway to get it fixed (one chap needed major jaw bone surgery because he forgot to mention he had a degenrative bone disroder nerf).

I think it should be fine so long as you remember to get your notes/files from your existing dentist and consult your doctor to find out if there is any reaosn you should be careful, allergies etc.

and finally.....................

if you get fangs will you come and suck mah jubblies???

My cousin works in a dental lab. I'll just quote him: They do the same job for less money. If you are unlucky you get bad stuff. It can happen here too. But if it happens here you are in a way better position to get it repaired or redone without extra costs.

Consider youself lucky then, there are an estimated 4 million people in the UK now who can't even register with a dentist because they have all reached or exceeded thier patient limits. We pay our taxes and national insurance yet we still can't get the work done alot of the time and even when we can they won't cover cosmetic dentristry so they just butcher you and use crap materials. Even going private in the UK is a risky business, alot of the private dentists are just in a for a quick buck and the quality of work can be amazingly poor at times.

I am considering going here...

They have been on a few TV programs in the UK and alot of the newspapers have also covered them, the quality of work seems to be very high and the prices much much cheaper than the UK. The only thing holding me back now is I am hearing that Poland is quite a bit cheaper than Hungary and yet the quality of work is just as good.

lucky? maybe

we pay arround 50% of all the money we earn to taxes.
We must have a medical insurance, dental insurance, car insurnce, we pay road taxes on everything we buy is arround 16-30% taxes
Want a car? buy taxes, cars in germany are maybe 30% cheaper.

Though I must say, I aint complaining:).
I'am living in a nice country, i have a home i get food, what? i can even buy a PC with internet and play games! ..you know how many people dont have that?:eek6:

We pay almost the highest taxes and national insurance in the EU, also 17.5% purchase taxes. For that we get dirty streets full of theiving chavs, police who turn up 5 hours after the burglars have left, a national health service that is litterly dying and the highest retail prices anywhere in Europe. Hence the term 'Ripoff Britain'.

How so? We don't have any political parties worth voting for, none of them could make a substantial difference and infact most of them would only make things worse whilst filling thier own pockets and buying houses in the Med.

Labour were the lesser of 3 evils in many ways, the Tories are all about making the rich richer and cutting public services, the Liberals will say anything to get votes but they don't actually have a clue as to how to run a country and they would tax us to death if they ever got in.

Labour have done a crap job but at least unemployment has been very low for the last 8 years, it is only now that the wheels seem to be falling off and I can see a recession if the current trend of job losses continues for another 6 months.

How so? Tories have comitted to decrease taxation, please tell me how the can tax less and spend more on public services. They are also commited to raising the barrier on the higher level of taxtion, effectively losing another £5 billion a year in direct taxation and not explaining where they will make up the shortfall. They will screw the working classes and the lower middle classes as they have always done, you can't teach an old dog new tricks and old eatonians always look after thier own even when it isn't in the best interests of the country.

It is the same old story with the Tories, all smoke and mirrors with lots of backdoor taxation and tax breaks for the people who need it least. History shows I am right, how many unemployed did Thatcher leave this country with, why were the state owned companies sold off for a fraction of thier worth? Simple, to make money for the kind of people who vote Tory at every election. The rest of the country got shafted and we are still getting shafted because of it 20 years on.

Labour are shit but at least the economy hasn't be fucked up beyond all recognition as was done by Thatcher/Lawson/Lamont and before someone mentions Ken Clarke let me agree and say that the guy had a firm grasp of how an economy should be run, the Tory party rewarded him for it by refusing to make him party leader on 3 occasions. Now we have the 3rd bland Tory leader in a row who has no ideas and no policies, the guy is just a parrot for the senior Tory party members who don't give a shit about the country as long as thier interests are served.
