Demos

Could someone please run me through how to view a HL demo file please? I'd like to have a look for the purposes of a tactical analysis of a recent clan match...
Cheers in advance.

i wouldnt bother if i were you. Demos r buggered. They replace players with rotting halflife skins and fecks scoreboard as well as only being abkle to follow the person who recorded the demo.

In my view only point in a demo is to catch cheaters.

To record a demo:

I think to record its either
RECORD (filename) in the console or
RECORDDEMO (filename) in the console

to stop demo its
STOP or
STOPDEMO

to play demo back you load the console and type
PLAYDEMO (filename) or
PLAY (filename)

soz i dont know exactly which ones but you will know which one is correct as it will write in console: recording demo. . . when you type in the right one (also demo stopped etc)

Otherwise ch3tan will b able to tell you exactly which ones they r

You can play demos back at faster speeds too

playdemo demoname demospeed

demospeed of 2 is quite watchable unless you're gonna sit there and study the intricacies of how someone plays. Another mate of mine watches most of his on demospeed 3 ;-)

You're also supposed to be able to use

append demoname

to continue recording on top of an old demo file... useful for recording both CT and T halves of a match for instance. I have never used this option though, I prefer to keep the halves separate.

hhmm, in tfc demos are pretty widely used. match demos of top clan games are sought after by those with lpb connections...and demos showing you how to do tricks, such as conc jumping as a basic example..

i guess there isn't enough depth in the CS community to be interested in watching others play..or maybe its just the mod that lacks depth :D

Demo recording is so pathetic in cs that a lot of people dont' bother with it. The sight of Gordon freeman wielding an awp while having his body twisted 180 degrees just seems to... detract... from the demo somewhere ;-)

i guess so.....hell, actually playing CS is boring enough, why would anyone want to watch others play it for 30 mins straight.

if you do get into demo recording, your best bet is to use a script, such as thisone.
it enables multi demo recording while you play, but when you finish make sure you rename any demos you like because it'll overwrite them
Code:
alias demosay1 "letsee;wait;echo demo recording started;wait;dontsee;"
alias demosay2 "letsee;wait;echo demo recording stoped;wait;dontsee;"
alias demosay3 "letsee;wait;echo last demo finnished, no more demos left;wait;dontsee;"
alias demstop1 "stop; demosay2;wait;wait;wait;"
alias dem1 "demosay1; record demo_01.dem; alias next_demo dem2"
alias dem2 "demosay1; record demo_02.dem; alias next_demo dem3"
alias dem3 "demosay1; record demo_03.dem; alias next_demo dem4"
alias dem4 "demosay1; record demo_04.dem; alias next_demo dem5"
alias dem5 "demosay1; record demo_05.dem; alias next_demo dem6"
alias dem6 "demosay1; record demo_06.dem; alias next_demo dem7"
alias dem7 "demosay1; record demo_07.dem; alias next_demo dem8"
alias dem8 "demosay1; record demo_08.dem; alias next_demo dem9"
alias dem9 "demosay1; record demo_09.dem; alias next_demo dem0"
alias dem0 "demosay1; record demo_10.dem;wait;wait;demosay3; alias next_demo demempty1"
alias demempty1 "letsee;echo You have exhausted this session's queue!;dontsee;wait;wait;wait;wait;"
alias next_demo dem1
alias letsee "developer 1"
alias dontsee "developer 0"
and
Code:
bind "x" "next_demo"
bind "y" "demstop1"

CS demos show thw wrong skin, yes, but only skins from the CS game.

I have never seen hossies, or any non Cs models on demos. Just Ct's in artic skins and visa versa.

I've seen the hl deathmatch skins and gordon freeman in various demos... one of them was very distorted too. It was like a zombie kneeling half into the ground. Mentally disturbing ;-)

in HLDM we are able to record HLTV demoz which is very very goodie...dunno if U guys can do it in CS and TFC??......I mean...HLTV demoz...U can change between ALL the players that are playing so 1 demo is in fact 10 regular demoz if its a 5 vs 5 game...choose if U want to freespec...followspec or ineyespec....and get a map up aswell to see all the players at the same time.....havent palyed CS or TFC 4 a loooooong time so I dunno if U guys have that 2!??...came with the new patch.....

hhmm, ive heard that, but theres onething that bothers me:
file size! hl demos take up huge ammounts space, so these new ones must take up even more..now the whole point of most demos is for other people to watch......you get my drift..

Our server admin was not to pleased to check the server after a match and find a 620meg HLTV demo (it auto records) for a 40 minute match.

wtf? chetan just said he'd a 40 min demo using the new fangled demo stuff, at over 600 megs.

i know myself that a demo lasting one minute can easily be 3 megs(old style demos), and its a fact that you cant zipa solid file with 30% compression. hell, zipping single files will as likely as not get you a bigger file size
