Or rather the lack of it. For some reason, i cannot defragment my C drive (Local Disk).

I start up Disk Defragmenter and diskeeper Lite, and set them to analyze my drive. All that happens is, all the options lock up, which gives me the impression it's analyzing. So i wait...

...

And wait, then i'm finally left with all the options available again, but with no analysis. Telling it to defrag straight off does the same thing.

It's not that i have insufficient space (12.5 of 32 = 38% free), so that's out.

Reformatting sounds like a nicer choice day by day atm.

Have you tried O & O Defrag? It's The Defragmenter of choice for Windows XP™

You can buy a copy on-line. ;)

I think one of the most common causes of defrag programs not working is that summat else is accessing what it wants. Have you tried running up in safe mode, or killing all processes that you don't need running to do a defrag?

I had the same problem win my old 98se pc at work...it used to just grind for ages (overnight) and at the end say "scandisk has restarted 3 time. unable to complete.." or some other such boloxs. It was stuff running in the background causing it (iirc zonealram & pccillin were central culprits).

I dont know if O&O will fix your problem...but it fits nicely into xp...its a good product.
