Defensive Bonus- What is it?

Nobody seems to know, had suggestions such as it lowers howmuch damage your amour takes to increases your chances to defend or something.
So what is it exactly?

basicaly the higher the defense bonus the harder it is for the mob to hit you.

this is about defensive bonus on styles but I guess Azonic is talking about +defensive bonus on Catacombs items...
