So. Been scraping shit off the walls at my birds house for ages. Whoever owned the house beforehand was a right wanker - papered over plaster multiple times, then plastered back over that paper, then papered on top of that plaster again. Then painted with a lead-based paint so thick that magma doesn't get through it :(

Anyway. After fucking ages of this I'm now starting to paint. I've already given the kitchen and bathroom a base coat and now am gonna magnolia them to death.

Question is. Do you *really* need to use special kitchen and bathroom paint or will the normal shit suffice?

I've got a huge tub of magnolia and don't wanna spend any more money if I can avoid it - house will end up in the hands of scummy tennants anyway ;)

Edit: Oh yeah, if anyone's got a cheap and effective way of stripping paint of radiators before reapplying....

"proper" kitchen bathroom paint will make it easier to clean and resist humid environment for longer.

Have to agree with Laz on this one, the amount of times I've moved and helped redecorate you learn to use the proper stuff. 2 walls in my room were actually pretty close to what you're going through, was a pain in the ass.

I LOATHE wallpaper.

and for the radiators - - no real easy way to do them.

sand them down and use radiator paint again, when the radiator is "warm"

YES you do need the special paint for the bathroom or you will be stripping/painting it again in 3 years.

I don't think you need special radiator paint. You can use normal gloss paint

I feel your pain mate, I moved into my fiancee's flat about 18 months ago and I'm still decorating and sorting it out. Recently took a week off work and fitted a new kitchen, or intended to. Thanks to the messed up plumbing I haven't managed to finish it but after getting the 7 layers of wallpaper off the walls I felt like crying my hands ached so much. The walls of course were a bloody mess after all that scrapping - one of them is still getting the odd touch up with polycell smoothover :(

I'd get it redone professionally but I ain't made of money!

No, it's a myth that you have to. If you're tiling the spash backs and the room doesn't get humid constantly then there's no need. Mould etc needs time and humitidy to build up.

The only time I've ever used special paint was when I didn't intend to repaint the room within the next 5 years or so - but as I always repaint rooms every 3/4 years just to freshen the room, there's no need. I also tend to change the colour in rooms too, I get bored otherwise and it's a good time to repair any damage etc:p

Radiators need special paint though, you can get away with metal paint, but it won't last long. If your radiators are a complete mess you'd probably be easier getting a radiator cover. I'm going to do that in my hall as the radiator is ancient and not in a good way and frankly we need a shelf or soemthing to put our keys on - so it's killing two birds and all that pap ;)

The clear and simple approach to decorating (with success) is to ask Trem what he would do and then do the opposite ;)

Gonna go with the standard magnolia. If I'm renting the place out then I'm gonna end up retouching between each tenant anyway.

House looks better than mine :(

Problem with magnolia is it looks shit and doesn't hide the dirt nearly as good as its supposed to do.

True, but every fucktard out there believes that magnolia is the height of chic as they've been told so repeatedly by all the fucking home improvement programs.

I knew this anyway but it didn't help when the rental agent we had over went "nice looking house, paint it magnolia" :|

You only need special kitchen/bathroom paint if you don't ventilate those rooms.

In other words, scruffy bastard = special paint.
