Plot
Dead Space is a third-person Sci-Fi survival horror game that takes place in space on the USG Ishimura. The player controls Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent with his small maintenance crew to repair the USG Ishimura when it becomes stranded in space. However, neither Isaac nor his team know what lays in wait for them. An alien race known as the "Necromorphs" have taken over the ship and infected the entire crew. What makes this threat different is the fact that the Necromorphs are highly adaptive. When one has its legs cut off, it simply switches to walking using its arms, or other appendages.

This adaptability leads to the game's biggest feature: dismemberment. Dead Space focuses on having you, the player, using Issac's main weapon, a plasma cutter, to deal with the enemies, and the different ways they act. For example, cutting off a creature's head will make it thrash blindly for the player, but going for the legs might disable it permanently. Players will also have to avoid "pregnant" necromorph's bellies. Doing so will result in many small necromorphs appearing swarming Isaac These considerations must be taken for all of the enemies that Isaac encounters.

The story is told mostly through video/audio logs, in the vain of BioShock. Although, cutscenes will undoubtedly be used as well. Little is known about the story, aside from the general synopsis above. More will be known soon, though, as the game launches this October for PC, PS3, and 360 from EA's Redwood Shores studio.

Main Features
# Dismemberment: This game's core mechanic is the strategic dismemberment of alien appendages. In true survival horror fashion, you must conserve ammo - in true Hollywood horror fashion, it's all about seeing bone fragments and arterial spray fly across the room. Enemies in the game are resilient. The conventional wisdom that a headshot will stop an alien is thrown out in Dead Space.
# Setting and Atmosphere: Dead Space is an immersive, interactive horror movie experience. An emergent, panic-inducing audio system, an innovative Minority Report-style HUD, and a nuanced, scary pace that will sink you into the game experience.
# Unique Weaponry: Stasis Gun is used to slow charging aliens and to help solve puzzles. The Gravity Gun and unique projectile-based weaponry are mining tools - your ability to upgrade weapons increases as you progress through the game.
# Zero Gravity: Survive and destroy the aliens in Zero G environments. Manipulate gravity with Havok physics to solve puzzles and fight enemies.

Gameplay
The players must fight their way through various levels of a stricken mining ship, which has been infested with an alien species known as the 'Necromorphs'. The game features an 'over the shoulder' third-person perspective, similar to games such as Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War. The interface does not feature a traditional 'heads up display'. Instead, information is relayed to the player via lights and translucent screens which hover over Isaac's weapons and armor

The player will encounter weightless and decompressed environments, which Isaac can navigate using a pressurized suit equipped with magnetic boots. Some levels will even lead out onto the surface of the ship's hull. Floating debris will present a hazard, and Isaac can lose his footing and simply float off into space. In keeping with Isaac's profession as an engineer rather than a soldier, weapons in the game are mostly improvised, and consist of an array of bolt cutters, stasis guns and rudimentary energy weapons.

Combat in the game is complicated by the fact that Necromorphs are not simply rendered 'dead' after a certain number of rounds have been fired at them. Rather, they can adopt new stances and tactics, and even sprout new limbs, based upon where they have been wounded. Hence, the player must find and exploit specific weak points. The game's Executive Producer, Glen Schofield, has said that 'the primary theme of Dead Space is dismemberment', and early previews of the game have noted the high levels of gore.

I thought 1 was good too to be fair

I suggest playing it on hard tho, it makes it far more intense trying to save ammo

too many fucking games going about latley.

i just got fable 2, then i want to trade that in for gears of war 2, although i could probably rent it and finish it quick if its like the 1st.

this looks good too and then noticed far cry 2 on tv.

I think this game got a pretty "meh" preview from PC Gamer, mostly for being too repetetive. They got kudos for doing the whole "Diablo in space" thing though. :) But overall impression wasn't the greatest as far as i remember. *ponders*

it got 86%
The reason it didn't get the +90% score is due to the environment not being all that original or something we hadn't seen before.
86 is still awesome though.

But, but Fallout 3 looks like it will be taking my money soon!

It's wrong. Resolution is absolutley fine, controls you can change quite easily (though I haven't changed much from the defaults and I'm generally quite fussy.)

If it was oblivon with guns, it would be awesome.

It's not though, and BEtheseda have tried to keep as much of the old genre as possible.

Bloody mess with a baseball-bat and groinshots to kids, here i come! :)

Oh aye, i know. Hopefully our lovely mod communit at NMA will bring back some glorious perks and things we all loved in our perverted sicko depths :D

But, aye, i'm waiting with horror mixed feelings too.

Will it, or will it not.

And gods above help betheseda if unarmed+throwing combo as a viable option is taken out

It's pg-18 atleast, which promises perhaps...whorehouses! :D

Well, I know its only from one review, but PCgamer gave it 90% and said it is very gory.

Looks awesome from the SS's anyway.

It can be a good game, by all faults and fails, and it could be my game of the decade, and most likely will be, but i'm still worried is or isn't it a fallout :p

Dead Space got much lower than that in Swedish PCgamer (cant remember the score now though or if it was just a really critical preview), and Fallout 3 got 81% by Swedish PCgamer. *ponders* I guess we are just harsher up here in the cold north. :p

not the smartest thing in the world giving the game to someone who doesnt like rpg's to do a review :p (i vaguely recall he was the guy who didnt like oblivion either)

I hear Dead space gets repetative later on though havent played it enough to confirm that as i have been playing guitar hero lately

Thats why I normally trust PCgamer UK to a degree, they always match reviewers with the type of game they normally play.
