Just after I got my internets working again a bit better this.

Used PC all day yesterday, not problems at all, no inkling anything was up.

Been out today, got home this evening and turned it on, it beeps, displays mobo manufacturer splash screen and that's it. Gets not further. It has done this occasionally before, but a second restart has always been fine. This time there is nothing at all, I have tried it loads of times. Fans are all spinning, the HDD's seem to be too, though only quietly, but I can definitely feel them vibrating slightly.

So what's the most likely culprit? Mobo or CPU? Either way I'm a bit screwed. Am currently saving to build new machine, but am a way off having the necessary cash yet, and there's not point at all pumping anything into that old machine. And I'm not sure I can work with on this laptop (also a bit ageing now) for the next few months :(

What sequence of beeps does it do (and if it's more then one short beep, what type of MB is it?)?

Can you get into the BIOS at that point? If not, pull out everything you dont need to run it (hdds, dvd, sound cards etc) and see if you can then - blow it all out to clear the crud, check for shorts on the mainboard, clear the bios with the motherboard jumper and give it another run.

It is just one short beep, just as normal.

I can't get into BIOS, no.

Will give all that a go when I am less tired Kryt, thanks for the help.

It is an old skt 939 AMD processor. If it is that then it might be worth buying an old cheap one just to limp through the next few months.

Reset BIOS via the jumper. Remove ram one at a time trying with only 1 stick in (assuming you have more than one).

Try that luv.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I haven't had a chance to do much till today, my day off, so apologies for not replying sooner.

Strangely when I just, on a whim, turned the PC on it just started, as if nothing had happened! Fucking thing, it didn't even give me a 'last time I screwed up' type message, it just sat there looking completely innocent.

I have since been backing everything up on it as I am pretty sure it will happen again, and I still have no idea what caused it.

This is good news though as my laptop has just started turning off and displaying a BSOD talking about memory problems! It is just one thing after another at the moment, my router is still requiring frequent reboots, and whilst I am cautiously pleased about the main PC overall it is a real pisser.

Do you think it could be something that simple G? It was dusty in there, but not not that bad.

I was going with either a loose connection or some component that is on the fritz.

Who knows, but if it limps on a couple of months then I can get a new one. At least the lappy has got through the day without any further problems.

Dust has been a major fucker in some of my older boxes. Mostly because they were stored in ikea desks with no real air circulating. It might not be the cause but if you've cleaned it and its improved, do as you're already doing and back that shit up.

I do concur.
