Owen played well although his first touch was poor in places, Lampard played well and I dunno why Sven doesnt start with Vassell he is a quality player.

All in all a good victory in the second half after Cole & Mills played shite in the first half.

Yeah I know :) He didn't have a very good game at all, he can play better than that even at his age.

Dull as fuck game until the last half an hour, Southgate should have got a penalty and even if Owen's penalty wasn't really a penalty ref's nearly always give them in those situations.

Only Owen had a really good game tbh, was expecting more from Vassell but didn't really do much when he came on. Anyone else think he's really underrated? He's a great player.

Hurrah!

Owen + Vassell would have owned Slovakia, I think Rooney's lack of pace is what kept him out the game.

Vassell should automatically get a place ahead of that donkey Heskey.

umm try adding Steven Gerrard to that

Vassell is only a 30-35 min player. A bit similar in many aspects to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

and why in the hell is Paul Scholes still playing for England, he has done shit all in the last 5-10 games. Even though his club form was 'good' last season he doesn't deserve to play for England after recent performances.

Frank Lampard is not an international class player.

Comedy shit once again, oh yes.

In what way, that free kick was a fluke and all goalies have been caught out at some point by one.

James was not outstanding, but he was okay, made a good save early on and was under pressure in the first half when England's defence decided to take a 15 minute tea break, and Ashley Cole went off looking for the biscuits.

Rooney and Owen both missed a lot of chances, but Owen stayed on to make amends, Rooney didn't get that chance.

Agreed, Vassell is a second-half player, keep him that way, he was very effective.

I don't rate him personally.

That's true, but has he ever started up front for England? I can't remember :/

Scholes does wonders for Man Utd, he's just been poor for England for the past two years now, very strange. Perhaps Sven shouldn't pick him for a few matches and hopes when he picks Scholes again he's back on his form, he's capable of lots of goals.

The first half was shambolic for England. The players looked uncomfortable with the pace and formation, and half the time it resembled schoolboy football, with everyone running after the ball.

A lot of the blame has to lie with Scholes, who once again turned in a listless, bored and unimaginative performance. For the diamond formation to work, the man at the peak of the diamond *has* to push forward, create chances and support the strikers. Otherwise the front men have to rely on the wide players to feed them, which means 1) they don’t get the service they need, and 2) you get horribly exposed on the counter-attack, both of which happened. Scholes hasn’t distinguished himself for England in a long time now, and it’s about time that Sven got rid of his “automatic picks” and picked players that want to be on the pitch. Scholes looks like he doesn’t care that he’s wearing an England shirt any more, and a game or two on the bench might be enough to remind him that he’s not indispendable (as it did for Beckham at Man U).

Rooney was disappointing, but a lot of this was down to the lack of service, meaning he kept having to drop back and pick up the ball himself. Saying he’s shite after one performance is ridiculous, one poor game does not make a player bad, just like one good game does not make them good. Rooney underperformed no more than any other player on the pitch - it’s just after the Turkey game we expected him to be magical. What he does need to do though, is learn to be a professional. The thing that distinguishes Owen is no matter how badly things are going, he’ll generally work through it and not get frustrated. Rooney needs to kerb his temper, relax, and learn some patience. He has a lot to learn, and to be honest he needs to go to a bigger club with a more experienced striker whom he can learn from.

Vassell was good, but I don’t think he’s the permanent strike partner for Owen - I don’t think we have one of those yet. He’s filling the super-sub role well, coming on and using his pace against tired legs to shake the game up a bit, I can’t see him doing enough over a full 90 minutes.

Gerrard was the player Scholes should have been (used to be) - creative, strong on the ball, and always looking to go forward.

Lampard did okay, but he’s simply not a left-sided midfield player. The exposure of Cole down the left largely came from the inability of Lampard and Neville to cover the left back when he ran forward. Cole needs a proper left-sided player who knows how to cover a left back on the overlap, can link up and cross in. Unfortunately Wayne Bridge doesn’t play for a trendy enough club, so Sven will continue to shoehorn ill-fitting centre midfielders into the left spot whilst Bridge languishes on the bench.

And the most prolific Englishman of last season still can’t even make the bench.

I agree with pretty much all you said there, I misphrased that earlier tbh. He played shite against Slovakia, he's by no means a shite player. He does need to ply his trade at a bigger club with a well known proven striker for him to really succeed, but Everton won't let go of him for obvious reasons.
