David Gemmell - RIP

Having read all his books starting with Legend 12+ years ago, I am pretty gutted. His writing was very formulaic but great for leaving the real world behind for an afternoon.

May he rest in peace.

Already covered this in OT my greatest author, just finished his First book about Troy I am gutted to say the least. R.I.P he will be remembered as a Legend!

I don't think I can face reading the 2nd Troy novel when it gets released, anyone who comes along to finish the trilogy off will not be up to David's standards and I would hate to get more involved with the storyline just to see it end badly in a couple of years time.

reading through all his books again now, only one i am missing is winter warriors. he was the auther that really got me into reading properly away from school. a real loss

will definatly read the 2nd troy book, personally i dont think anyone could write the 3rd and keep gemmells style.

Never actually read any of his books, but a friend of mine was a devoted fan and would constatly try to hide Waylander in with my D&D books when I left his house

I can only remember reading Waylander, Legend and The King Beyond the Gate. They were probably the most accessible fantasy books I have ever read but they kickstarted my love for all things fantasy. Thoroughly enjoyable books.

If it wasn't for ol' Druss I would never have bothered reading the Song of Ice and Fire series (the first 3 are almost my all time fav fantasy novels).

He'll be missed.

P.S. Probably not that nice to mention another authors books in a tribute thread but I'm sure you all get my drift.

Shame - I have a fair number of his books - sure they are formulaic but the formula was great and he made them extremely readable plus there was a certain grittyness that most fantasy lacks.

Now he's gone I dont think theres any decent fantasy writers left - the genre has gotten stale (I dont count Pratchett amongst this as his books are too tongue in cheek - humour rather than real fantasy).

A sad loss.

Try Robin Hobbs Farseer trilogy mate I love Gemmell and often put off reading another author as I found them somewhat lacking. However I have been proven wrong by Robin its a fantastic trilogy. Actually so is the Orcs trilogy by Stan Nicholls,

Yea Robin Hobbs books has the same sort of feel as Gemmell had.
