A Billy Connolly quote springs to mind. It goes "How can you tell when a politician is lying? Their lips are moving".

Anyway Labour can fuck off. The Tories might not have been perfect, but they made this country a nicer place to live. Labour are trying to turn it into an exceedingly shit place to live with their nanny state legislation. I just hope if they get another term they grant Scotland independence, so I can move back up there and get away from their uncalled for interference. On the subject of David Blunkett, I hope his guide dog sees a sexy female guide dog across the street and leads him under a bus.

Not particularly interested in politics but it's a bit off saying that Conservative policies led to a recession in the UK ... It was, in fact, due to the world economy being severely depressed which had repercussions for all countries including our own.

As for Blunkett and Labour - yes I agree they have gone too far with the erosion of civil liberties, and have created an environment of fear and distrust to obtain their current powers. In my humble opinion, holding people without trial or reason, making people carry ID cards to prove who they are, having powers to search and detain on a whim make our country very similar to the fascist states of the 20th century but also to the very enemy these measures are seeking to 'defend' us against.

Surely if we have to change the values our society is built on to fight our enemies then that enemy has already won.

I'm not much into politics myself and i'd find it hard to trust any politician. But this has made me remember one of my mates from edinburgh who, evidently didn't know who David Blunkett was and saw him on the telly; and I quote "How can someone like that get into government, I mean come on. He's clearly wasted"

I remember before 9-11 when everyone was whining about the proposed terroism act taking away people liberty. Well the ability to detain people at will for suspected terroism has probably saved alot of lives since then.

On the subject of ID cards i think they should go the whole hog and take DNA samples from everyone it would do wonders to the crime rates. Think of all the rapists that would be caught immediately.

heres my 2p worth (and its not about brooky-bodhi ;) )

All the "claims" that the political parties make in their lead up to to the elections should be used as a contract which they need to adhere to if they DO get elected.

If they do not meet their targets, out they go before the end of term.

Nothing but lying toerags who would claim to be able to fly to the moon if it got them another vote. Once they are in office, they would claim that "everyone was mistaken - we neveractually SAID that"""

FECKING TOSSERS.

Although I sincerely hope the Tories DONT get another term, not sure I can cope with Scotland + Bodhi ;)

Think about what it would have been like if the Nazis had had a DNA database in the thirties (hell, not just the Nazis, the Americans and the Australians did enough dodgy stuff). Then think forward to some future date when a government decides that say, you can't have children because 'undesirable traits' (decided by them) pop up in your profile. Once you go down that road, there's no going back. And if you think that couldn't happen, look at the recent 'cot death' mothers imprisoned on the grounds (of subsequently discredited) medical opinion; its not much of a stretch to lock someone up because their genes show a propensity to be violent or whatever.

edit: and don't think the government wouldn't mind raising a few quid by flogging our profiles to the insurance companies and the drugs corps. Just coz its illegal now, doesn't mean they wouldn't change the law later, "in the public interest" of course...

How could you simpletons not like Blunkett?
The man is the UK's Saviour against the Terrorist Threat!

By 2010 Blunkett would have prevented approximately 5000 acts of Terrorism! It's amazing, considering no one knew they were going to happen.

Local crime will continue to go unchecked, because everyone knows tackling theft/abuse/assault is not as important as a possible terrorist attack. Which costs £Billions to prevent.

This government is a joke! I want my money back :\

im all for id cards tbh

anything that will attempt to reduce crime and most importantly reduce the massive amount of benefit fruad that occurs in this country is a good thing

The majority of people who are against this kind of thing usually have something to hide, why should u care if "big brother" is watching you? surely if your not doing anything illegal then youve no worries at all

Restricting people having children wouldnt necessarily be a bad thing in this country with its massive teen pregnancies and the waster state we are creating

I would luv for the govt to restrict these neds/chavs from breeding like gremlins in a swimming pool

Because you don't get to decide the law! You may not have anything to hide now, but what happens when they decide, lets say, criticizing the government on a public forum, is a crime?

I'm not particularly against ID cards (although the government proposals will actually do feck all to reduce crime or fraud and cost billions to boot), but I AM against the way the government intends to use them at the back end.

Jesus. Teenage mothers are the price of freedom, you don't sterilise them you educate them, and make sure they don't automatically get hand outs. You're exactly what scares me about ID cards; the government could bring all kinds of fascist measures in without our sheep like population baa-ing once.

interesting then why other free countries throughout europe dont seem to have the problems we do

DaGaffer said:

How can you educate children who have no respect for authority and wouldnt listen to any advice whatsoever....unless it was ant n dec who told them :p

seriously though, educating doesnt work the country has let the handout state get into to much of a mess before attempting to stop it

By introducing benefits which in effect "pay" you for sitting on your arse and not bother, you create the problem in that they think "why bother"

They then dont gain the social/respect they would gain through the education system and also through a working environment, as a result they dont have any respect for other people which leads to unruley behaviour and criminal actions as they have no actual sense of right and wrong.

WHen caught "misbehaving" they are treated so lightly that they make a mockery of the justice system and do not fear doing wrong again.

Whilst doing all this they basically hump like rabbits and hope that the same state who paid them for sitting still will keep their kids in nappies.

The strongest factor in a kids upbringing are its parents and these kids parents are degenerate, handout taking, crime committing layabouts who then make their kids think its okay to this type of thing and so the circle begins

kinda makes you sad to think just how far its fell apart.

I suppose youve got to ask yourselve what would you rather have, a decrease in freedom for a improvement in the overall country in terms of crime, lifestyles and general attitudes towards each other. or would you rather be as free as a bird in a place thats burning up?

/rant off :p

National Identity cards, detention without trial, trial without jury... it's the bloody thin end of the wedge to fascism.

New Labour is following the (highly successful) repression tactics in the US. Scare the population witless, label anyone who objects as 'unpatriotic', and have a nice controllable population (of course you have to know who they are... so lets have ID cards, retinal scans, whatever).

ID cards have been used in the US for a long time. Didn't stop 9/11 though did it? They didn't stop the first World Trade centre bombings, they didn't stop the Oklahoma bombings.

Does Mr Blunkett (currently trying to outdo Michael Howard as the worst Home Secretary ever) seriously think that ID cards are going to benefit anybody except EDS (who will fuck up the implementation anyway).

as far as im aware the main impact that ID cards had in the US was to reduce the amount of social fund fraud that occured

Imo that is one of the main reasons blunkett is introducing the cards, and also to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants hopefully.

You cannot educate someone who is not interested in being educated and is of below average intelligence. Unfortunatley technology and tolerance is getting in the way of natural selection.

I have this bridge for sale... interested?

Recent government figures show a reduction in illegal immigrants and benefit fraud. This is, apparently, due to the wonderful measures taken by New Labour.

Now if this is so, why bother with ID cards? To catch that last Nigerian in East London? I don't think so.

'Education' can mean a lot of things, including the knowledge that the state won't necessarily pay out.

The irony here is that you've got a government that on the one hand is taking away freedoms, but on the other is quite happy to let chavs suck on the social teat from cradle to grave; and why not? Make the scumbags dependent on you and if they bother to vote, guess who its going to be for? Your government likes you that way, stupid and leashed.

imho NO one can be as bad as the tories, but give them you're vote and see what they do with it, micheal howard was in thatchers cabinet and look what he did, now he wants to run the country, the uk population can still remember what him and his cronies did last time and iirc there are more 30+ years old people voting than <30 year olds, those that can remember what the tories did to the UK would never vote them back in.

Don't me wrong I aint nevah voting Tory. They're all about retribution andpunishment and shit. But this is bollocks, UKIP would be worse.

I feel something isn't right here, because I agree with Tom. Blunkett is a looney, a dangerous looney.

the one thing i never understand is why not just kill the benefit state off?

surely the workers who dont rely on it will vote for you as they suddenly dont need to pay high taxes etc as youve just pumped billions back into the economy?

as for the voting thing, the majority of voters in the uk are pensioners which is why the govt is hesitant to legalize cannabis as being seen to legalise a "dangerous drug" would kill their voters which is a shame coz they know it would make em a fortune in weed tax :p

Yeah, the Tories were grrrrrreat! Unless you happened to be a:

Coal Miner
Student
Print Worker
Nurse
Doctor
Homeowner
Shop proprietor
Unemployed person
SIngle Mother
Child
Shop worker
....

Or just about anyone else who wan't either a member of the fucking conservative party or a multi-millionairre.

Anyone who thinks that Michael 'Slightly to the right of Mussolini' Howard would reverse the current erosion of civil liberties is very sorely mistaken. This is one of the people who introduced the scummy Criminal Justice Act ffs.

No matter how bad labour are, and at the moment they are very bad indeed, the tories would make matters about a million times worse.

Killing off the Benefit State does appeal to a lot of people.

But what do we do about people who need help... whether it be unemployed, low income, sick, whatever?

Every European state has a safety net for those that need help from the rest of us. Some countries spend a lot more on Social Security than we do in the UK; yet don't have a horribly substandard lifestyle.

I would suggest that it's not the Benefit system that needs to go, but the way it is implemented at all levels.

Where's your proof that these people are of below average intelligence?

Secondly where'd you get the proof that you can't educate these people?

Thirdly, how the hell do you think these people became so apathetic in the first place? Look at what they are born into, and how they're forced to live, look at the people that surround them (visions of their selves in 20 years time). The idea that this 'problem' is down to lazy scroungers is BOLLOCKS. these people are a result of the way our society runs. the poor stay poor, with no hope.
