Does anyone know of any good dating site software scripts out there or, more importantly perhaps, does anyone know of any bad ones?

I'm considering getting one from these people: http://www.azdg.com/scripts.php because their prices are a little below the average of what I've seen so far, though I don't know anything about these people so it would be a bit of a gamble.

This site also looks kind of nice: http://www.datetopia.com/ only a lot of their links are broken, which kind of put me off. :)

I don't have the time, the money it would cost me in hours spent would be immense compared to what I will spend on a script someone else has already made. Still, I'll probably mess about with it once I get one. :)

Writing your own and debugging it would be a bit of a mission, to say the least - something that big would have a good 10K lines of code if it was written properly with error control and buffer protection and whatnot

also those guys dont seem to know what is what:

Status: FREE (GPL)

Price: $30

eh??

Sounds more like you dont know what is what ;)

Contrary to popular opinion GPL does not mean you cant charge money for it.

Actually the one I think you're referring to does have a free version, then one for $30 or whatever and works their way up to $399 for their newest script. I think they aren't that bad actually at what they do (writing the scripts), only their customer support is terrible and their English is worse. If I bought their script I'd have to go through all the text/language files and correct tonnes of spelling and grammar - though they do offer discounts if you help them with language translations and stuff.

The other one, http://www.datetopia.com/ , that had a few broken links have fixed those errors sinse I wrote to them; they seem much more on the ball and to know what they're doing, I think I'm going with them for now so I'll let you know how it goes. :)

P.S. I'd say the free version from the first one is definately worth downloading though if you just want a fairly simple dating/classifieds type script. I think you can do quite a bit with it, I just can't be arsed. :)

Datetopia

In case anyone is interested for future reference; the Datetopia script is pretty good, in the middlish price range for such things but the support is very poor - not bad as such but very very very slow, sometimes customers are not receiving a reply at all to their quiries, which is pretty bad for the customers and the guy selling the script in my opinion. I get the impression that the whole operation is run by one guy, though he tries with his site to exude an aura of a bigger business with support tickets and so on.

Anyway, I wouldn't not recommend this dating script but I should think there are better options out there for people who don't have much technical know-how, scripts that come with better and clearer instruction and a support staff that actually answers your quiries.

It's not a bad script otherwise as long as you know your way around PHP a fair bit. Though the guy does offer an installation service for $25, it would mean you'd have to leave it as it comes if you haven't a clue about these things.

So, this is what I've done with it so far: http://www.dream-dating.org

When I get around to it I'm going to make some nicer menu buttons.

That last link should be: http://maljonicsdreams.com/phpbb2/about621.html by the way.

Also in favour of Datetopia, sort of anyway; I ordered an addon so everyone can write blogs but the guy sent me the wrong scrips, I thought I was never going to see my money again but he surprised me be responding to my complaint the same day and sending me the right script and letting me keep the one he sent me by mistake. :)

Funny you should mention Dateopia. Just checked my Software section and they are the only ones I have listed (under Matchmaking). The companies I deal with for these affiliation links are pretty strict yet Dateopia is on their books. Probably a reliable concern.

F*** I got so many links to sort out on my Software I have been avoiding it for ages. Have to created product links as opposed to Site links all through the whole gaboodle. A great deal of work. But I have tested some of the software companies products and been delighted so I am going to persevere.

Work work work site - yeah my new CSS site.

I just wanted to bump this to say that datetopia is a terrible script, just in case anyone is encouraged to buy it after reading this thread - just don't!

The deal seems okay at first but the support is terrible, which in most cases might not be so bad because you could get help somewhere else - but in this case the script in obfuscated (sort of encripted) so that the only person who can alter anything is the guy you buy the script from in the first place. And the guy you buy the script from is not to be trusted in my opinion.

At the moment I'm now looking at osDating which I can already see is a lot better just by looking through the files, plus the beta version is free. A full release version is coming out very soon by the sound of it, all the details are on this site: http://www.tufat.com/ which has lots of great scripts for only $5. I use their flash chat script on the Terry Pratchett Boards and it works very well. I think the same people are involved with osCommerce, a free shopping cart script?

Anyway enough of praising osStuff, I just wanted to say don't buy datetopia software or any php scripts that have obfuscated or encripted code so you can't alter it yourself - it's a terrible practice on their part and a waste of money on yours. Even without the obfuscation datetopia is still not a very good script in my opinion, but with it there's nothing you can do about it.

These are just my opinions of course and anyone's welcome to make up their own mind, but I just couldn't live with myself if someone bought datetopia because of what I wrote earlier when I didn't have all the details I do now many months later.

It didn't do that when I just tried it, not that it really matter 'cause I'll be deleting that datetopia script as soon as I've moved everyone's profiles over to a new script.
