well, there you have it folks. BigCompany's management have come to the conclusion that the myriad employees are.....*shock*....spending company time online for...*horror*...personal reasons. thus all internet activities are to be suspended as of last week.
they don't seem to realise that the nature of some peoples jobs dictate that they _have to be online for certain reasons, like vendor sites, tech sites and diverse expertise sites in order to help sort problems et al.
I tried to explain this to my manager, but he just muttered "internet is bad mmmmkay?" and then stuck his head back up his arse. ah well...there's always the evenings :/

Sounds like my job now. If my boss is in, I have no internet access. Lucky they don't ever check logs really.

Though if they did, I wouldn't really care.;)

Bummer :(

Fair point though, without legitimate access to sites needed for work I'd be stuffed to perform my job. (accounts for 10% of my surfing in reality :) )

Isn't the fact that you're posting this on a public forum which has got nothing to do with your work whatsoever evidence enough that any concerns about Internet misuse your employers have may be entirely justified?

It's hard to imagine what possible business use you could claim to get out of using this forum.

Sorry to state the obvious...

I think he means they are doing a blanket ban on all internet access. Which seems a bit OTT.

Using the internet at work is a total fucking skive. I used to do it all day long. I too had a job which "required" me to use the internet, for research, information and trade sites. Obviously, this use constituted about 30 minutes per day, and the rest was spent fucking about. I fully admit that I was skiving my ass off.

If that's what you wanna do then fine, but complaining because your company doesn't like it, or coming up with some crap like "but I *neeeeeed* to use it as much as I do for legitimate work purposes" is just that - crap. You're just pissed off because it's dawning on you just how much time you spend skiving, and you're wondering how the fuck you're gonna spend that time now.

It is definitely OTT - but its not really surprising. Sounds like they need (currently lack) some kind of I.T presence there who can actually talk to them about firewalls, etc.

That said, if they are even contemplating banning all usage of the Internet they clearly don't perceive it to be a fundamental requirement in their business model. Very few companies actually need the Internet to operate. I could technically get by with just a recent copy of MSDN - and I work for an Internet company.

I could get by without it too...but I think of it as a perk of the job. They've started to be all facist about it here too, but thats more of a personal thing against me than having valid business reasons.

I find it useful to have Google available from work, helps answer so many questions I get asked.

I think my productivity would be about a third of what it is if I didn't have google..

then again if I didn't visit Barrysworld.... it'd probably double.

so removing my net access would cut my productivity to 2/3rds, job satisfaction by 1/1000 :)

and I'd be out the door :)

Guess what happened to me last week?

The only reason I'm getting away with this is that my boss is on holiday.;)
