They used to exist. I once worked for Capital One inputting the credit card applications.

Crap pay, boring work, but no responsibility as the 'Computer says yes/no'.

It was alright for 6 months.

That was along time ago though...

I entered data once. It's best done with lube, and you need to know where his off switch is. Damn that Soong for not adding some natural lube.

that was midly humerous, and may deserve a negative rep for making me laugh ;p

Data entry is boring, that much is granted.

Did a companies full client list(multinational) from those old print lists on to the computer. Name, place, number, location, blah di blah di blah...repeat.

After some time it becomes so automated in your head that you're not even sure you did it.

As a job among jobs it goes, but doing it day by day, for more then a week, sheeeesh.

I did data entry as part of working for a temping agency.
I was sent to a council office to get their backlog of forms entered. They allocated 2 weeks for it. I did it in 4 days.
Then I was sent to CCW for a couple of weeks. I got that done in 6 working days.
I got a name for fast and *accurate* data entry with the agency.

The problem with temping is that it only fills a hole in your CV until you get a "proper" job.

So yes there are data entry jobs. Try a local temping agency first.
And yes, blokes can do temping as well. :)

lol judging from this thread I assume you got one of those emails that goes like this:

Hello!
We are a new company and are looking for people just like YOU! You can earn up to eight million pounds a week by undertaking simple data entry work for us from THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME!!

I get about 2 a month through the uni webmail lol, will be kicking myself if they are genuine job offers...but then again I have done data entry and it was so boring I couldn't even be bothered to think of an analogy to compare it with!

Its probably one of the dullest jobs on the planet, and if it is one of the "work from home in your own time" things, it normally means 26 hours a day for what amounts to 1/5th of minimum wage.

McD's pays better for burger entry jobs.

lol tbh burgers don't tend to hang about long enough around me to get covered in saliva; there might be a quick squirt and then its all over o_O

I did data entry for a while many years ago while in Uni, The pay wasn't great (£7 or 8 per hour as I remember). I can see that it probably would be quite dull for most people, but I rather enjoyed it.

It might be better to get a Microsoft desktop certification, maybe an entry level ITIL qualification and do some basic desktop support, even if it means a little bit of outlay in he first place.

Downloand some CBTs then sit the Prometric exam - costs £88 for the MS cert, not sure what it would cost for the ITIL. Thats a very low outlay to get some work that will keep the wolves from the door in the short term while you sort out what you really want to do.

ITIL is the siphillis of the IT world, never before have I sat in a lecture hall being told so much bollocks, by a company being paid enormous amounts of cash to tell me not how to do any form of work with computers, but how the asshat managers should be wasting even more tax payers money with excessive meetings and more paperwork than ever (in a paperless society - go figure).

Go bow your head in shame for mentioning it in public!

Yeh, I hate ITIL :D

Annoyingly, some companies expect it and I agree, frothing pursuit of it leads to top heavy management. The place I previously worked are starting to look for ITIL certs from 1st line support.

I mention it only as a door-opener, not as a methodology I approve of :)
