A good post on DnL forums WoW vs DnL
Alot of the WoW players came from other games such as Ultima Online etc, because they were in search of something new. Blizzard gave them that from the quest system and PvP, like it has been stated already from levels 1-59 it was very enjoyable, especially from launch as everyone was about even all the way through, those left behind and new starters after the first month however were given a very hard time by the griefers who went around ganking for no reason other than they could get away with it.
WoW imo was just an mmog, nothing more than that. pointless PvP because the rewards were useless and unless you played 24/7 you had no chance to get the best items anyways. Very little thought was put into the development if it was supposed to be a Role Play Game.
Dark and Light will be a new mmoRPg, we will play the role of a character which will have a meaning within, and an impact upon the world of Ganareth.
There will be a player driven economy (something WoW could never have) which will be influenced mainly by the crafters and the fact all player made items will be consumable or will erode over time. All items can be traded and nothing is soulbound (which was another useless idea from Blizzard), all the scenery will be animated and the weather effects the plants (trees sway more with stronger winds) Snow builds up and slows some characters down because you have to walk through it, not on it. This all adds to the feel of the surrounding areas.
Also seasons change and each has a different impact upon the game, you must dress accordingly to the climate or else you could find yourself alot less effective if you are too hot, or too cold etc.
D&L will not be a mindless gankfest, it will actually require alot of planning and good tactics to pull off an effective siege on a hostile fortress.
Creatures are intelligent and will migrate if they are under threat, perhaps they have been hunted to near extinction, or their food source (perhaps another type of creature) has been wiped out instead.
Divine Intervention will have a major impact upon the way you play, having to pray to your god regularly to keep a high standing, which in turn will protect you from an unfair ambush, meaning someone ten levels higher than you will not have an easy time ganking you, there will be consequences for these sort of actions.
Crafting will be influenced by the weather and climate, therefore the seasons have another impact upon the game not to mention astrology, as you create your character you will be given a random birth date and star sign, when your zodiac is visible in the sky you will gain awsome powers which will also influence your crafting abilities, it will also effect other skills and spells too.
Talking about spellcasting, Druids can control the weather and can call down lightning if it is cloudy etc.
Player owned Towns and Frotresses are not just an area to be conquered, like a capture the flag game, they are actually communities of people and their homes and they will be fought over ferociosly as they have a purpose to those who defend them.
So after saying this I have come to the conclusion that a fair majority of WoW's community (Old RPers from UO and games alike) would turn to D&L if they all knew about it, infact there are already a good amount of ex-Wolrd of Warcraft players here already, and there has been very little advertising for this game so far. All we can do is sit back and wait till the NDA has been lifted and all the info has been released, then we will see the impact D&L has on other games
BTW in my opinion, Dark and Light is taking mmorpg's to the next generation with all the weather and season making an impact upon the game, I just can't wait to see how good it actually is![]()
