Anyone see the Transport minister trying to defend Speed Cameras on Top Gear last night.

Thought it was quite funny really, going on about statistics, but the stats show there hasn't really been that much change.

I've probably posted this on FH forums before, or BW way back in time, but anyway.

Yes, there are some stupid speed limits set.

Yes, it would be better if the offence applied was just "driving without due care and attention", rather than "went over the often arbitrary X mph limit by Y mph".

But, that would mean the whole burden of proof coming down the the policeman's opinion (lighting, weather, other traffic, type and condition of your vehicle etc).

It's much simpler to just have the speed limits. By driving on public highways you're agreeing to abide by the laws. Like it or lump it (don't drive).
