Just got caught by coppers doing 53 in a 30 zone :(

Blah, blah - a bit unlucky as I'm sure that was by far the fastest I did on that road, very briefly, middle of the night, and it's a two lane road anyway etc...

Fortunately they didn't seem to think I was a complete tosser and have put me down for 60 quid and 3 points. Could have been worse.

Slight dilemma, I have to hand my license in to the local cop-shop in 7 days and I've completely forgotten to transfer it to my current address. Am I in the shit ?

Also how will points affect my insurance next year ? Never had any before as I'm normally so safe :)

Help0r !

Um, yes, the address being wrong is going to be a problem. Technically you're supposed to change it as soon as your address changes, even if you have no plans to drive, like me who doesn't own a car and usually only hires a van to help with moving.

Someone else is probably better up on the legalities of it. I just remember reading the dire warnings on the licence (paper copy) and associated bits about not changing your address in a timely manner.

Sorry Wij but your a bit screwed, I don't think you get any points but you will get a hefty fine, I think it varies between £60 - £200 Im not 100% sure but I remember reading the paper bit of the license when I moved house recently and they will penalise you for it.

There is a period of grace after you change address of 6 months before you have to have your license correct so if you moved within that you'll be ok - just say you've just moved...

3 points is unlikely to have much impact on your insurance.

Your penalty is probably categorised as an SP30?

It doesn't affect insurance, afaik.

Few years ago I had my 1 and only accident on the M1 where i crashed into a TT

Police come, sorted it all out. I have to do a producer, fair enough. I head home get my stuff to find my MOT had run out :)

That was fun few weeks! Basically check other stuff is ok as well.

Unlucky mate. Easily done. I got away with it on a producer a few years back (copper just rolled his eyes), but I wouldn't count on it, depends on the mood of the copper, I think you'll just have to throw yourself on their mercy.

Hope I dont get asked to produce mine then.

Address is a good few years, and at least a couple of moves, out of date: and currently has an address in the wrong country.

So grow some sense and send it off NOW for a corrected licence. An address change is free, my last one only took 2-3 weeks to come back (but in my case I don't driver regularly, like I said, so it's no hassle). I believe a photocopy is sufficient for police etc purposes if the reason you can't produce the original is the DVLA has it.

£60 and 3 points for 53 in a 30 is extremely lucky, that is usually a court summons - it's not far off double the speed limit which can be an insta-ban.

As far as insurance goes, speeding on a public road (SP30) where three points are involved doesn't make a dent on insurance, just make sure you declare it. Every man and his dog has three points these days.

As for the address, ok it's bad you've not changed, but I don't see it being a big deal? They'll only write the date of the offence and the offence code on the paper counterpart of the licence, surely?

When I was caught speeding by a GATSO, i had to send my licence away but the DVLA cocked up the "issue" numbers of the card/paper parts of my licence, so one part was issue 13 and the other part issue 14. They sent the licence back to me saying "wrong parts sent", so I contacted the DVLA in a flap asking if they could speed up the processing of my new licence.

If you send your licence back to the DVLA with the appropriate address on the appropriate form marking the envelope as "URGENT" (helps to put in a covering letter explaining why it's urgent), you should be able to get it done within seven working days.

They managed it for me.

I got a speeding fine doing the exact same speed through Buxton over the summer. My licence is about 5 years out of date, a filthy bit of scrap paper. I sent it in to the courts and they sent it back with my speeding fine and no mention of the address being totally wrong. I was a bit disappointed actually, I thought they might send it off to the DVLA or something and I'd get a slightly more expensive than it should be new one. But no, I still have the same filthy old tattered bit of paper with the wrong address on it. :)

Although you may want to check that the DVLA have fixed the cockups that watchdog reported on a few months back. Some people were sending off paper licenses for new photo licences and getting them back with half their entitlements missing.

The DVLA was then insisting there was no cockup and the poor saps had to re-take tests :(

I produced today and she said it didn't matter. It will come back changed :D

*phew*

Got off lightly. Though in my defence it was half eleven at night and desterted and the road has two carriageways on that side and everyone does 40+ on it during the day even. They would have caught a shedload if they'd stayed there all night.

If you send a paper licence to get the address changed, will you need to switch over to the photo-ID version?

Yes

And you have to pay for the photo licence too

Lucky you Wij :).

Although I do wonder how this in future will relate to any national ID card scheme that gets foisted up on us. If they're going to be as lenient about address changes on that I can't see it really doing much good.

You will need to get the new photocard version, but if it's for a change of address you don't have to pay. I recently got mine done, and all it cost was 4 quid for the post office to check it, as I didn't want to send off my passport to prove the photo was me.

If you just want to change it from paper to photo because you want the new version, then that's when they charge you.

Hmmm, when I got the photocard it was due to needing to change address, and I'm sure I had to pay the full amount for getting photocard licence.

I do recall the instructions being a bit confusing on this point. The key thing is where it says it's 'free' it's referring to only an address change.

I guess someone who works at the DVLA would know 100% for sure.

Atleast you didn't hit a child.

Yes, because we all know that speeding kills.

Theres a road right around the corner from my house that for 80 years was a NSL. Now its 40mph. For no reason.

Anyway Wij, www.pepipoo.com is where you need to be asking this.
