Been thinking of trying to cut my hair myself instead of going to the hairdressers. My hair is quite long (goes just past my eyebrows) and its quite thick. Any methods of thinning it out? Was gonna have a hack at it with scissors coz the hairdressers always fuck it up. Just looking for tips :)

Practise practise practise.

You'll look like a twat with a scarecrow humping your cranium for a few months/half year, but if you really need to cut your hair to save a buck/get it just "right", that's the way.

Easier would be to cough up the cash, grow long hair, and change a hairdresser to a smaller business who care about your hair and not customers/day.

If you've never done it before, buy some cheap long wigs from a joke shop and practice.

Failing that, do what a lot of blokes do, get the clippers out, and go for a number one all over. Job done.

I smell a... GIRL!!! ARGHH!!! GET THE PITCHFORKS AND LETS KICK THIS ONE OUT OF TOWN!!.. Ehhh Offtopic...:flame:

On a more serious note, go for the fakehair to begin with if you must cut yourself.
Else pay the few bucks and get someone trained to do it - and that way you will support the state at the same time. Then we can all feel good about out self and get started with the damn revolution and hang all the... nevermind seeya later guys... Time for my medicine.

Isn't it easier / simpler just to get it cut by someone who actually knows how to cut hair ?

There must be tens of thousands of hairdressers. Its not like there's just one.

If its a money thing, how about saving up ? If your hair's long anyway, another month won't make much difference.

Why would you want to cut it yourself ? You WILL fuck it up unless its an all over clipper job.

When my house needed re-wiring, I called an electrician. I didn't think, aww what the heck, anyone can do this.

Enough said from me on this. Up to you. Its your barnet.

But that's how my friend cuts and learned it.

EDIT: Meant "the dark ages" :D

Yeah ive seen the pictures, just thought you might have trimmed it up every now and again.

Its not a money issue. Just want to give it a go myself and see if I can do a better job than the pro's. Unlikely though

Ah yeah, no. I could, since i can basicly bring it up front and cut it straight infront of the mirror, but usually i just let it be. Stays in better shape and doesn't grow that fast.

by the way, you can these days basicly buy a automated razor shave thingy that leaves your hair the height you want by brushing through it. Don't know what the length limit is though. But those things come with thinning blades and all sorts of sh*t :D

Also depends on what sort of hair you've got.

I've cut my own hair since I was about 14 (and had to start paying for my own haircuts) but because my hair is so curly, if I get the length wrong, its not obvious. (unless I really screw it up anyway)

The only reason I pay other people to do my hair is so I can get it straightened, as its a bugger to do myself. I usually get them to do a bit of a trim then.

DEAR GOD NO!!!!! Don't cut your own hair really! DON'T!

Let me set the scene, so it's 4 weeks ago. I figure it's time to cut the old hair, but having just spent the last of my money get wasted the previous night i couldn't afford too! O noes! I thought i have work in two days time and i look like a hobo, I know I'll try and thin it out and bit and make it a little more presentable. So off to the shower room i go with my trust pair of scissors!

*Snip, Snip, Snip, brush, brush* "ah this is going well" i thought. *snip* "ARGH F**K i cut too much off, I'll have to even it out on the other side!" *snip* "ARGH NOT AGAIN!". Shower room covered in hair at this point i look at my head and cry inside. "What have i done!". In the end i decide the razor is the only option. End up bald! BALD! DAMNIT!

i cut my own hair for years (until i got a gf that does it for me :p), it's really easy imo. just make sure you take your time. you can actually buy thinning scissors from superdrug, so maybe pick some up if your hair gets pretty thick (like mine).

rofl when i was a nipper i cut my own hair and got the classic "fringe that starts 1cm long and gradually inclines until its about 2mm long" look, twas horrific and then the parental units came in and said "have you cut your hair??" im surrounded by hair and in a very small voice say "no"...

i dont think they believed me lol.

tbh though hairdressers are bloody extortionate guys get off easier with barbers, for a chick a basic wash and cut is like £20 for a cut on its own and i mean like a really basic trim off the split ends its about £12-15 i mean wtf?? its not like theyre doing brain surgery, i just refuse to get my hair cut these days though i do get minor beauty treaments done at the college and its a fraction of the salon price!

Lol I did this as well - my parents went out for the night leaving my sister to babysit. They came home to find me with inch long hair (was previously mid-upper-arm length) and a very guilty look on my face. I'd also cut the hair(and ears - accidentally) off my teddy bear as well :p

Best thing is, I didn't get into any trouble at all for it - my sister got grounded for a month for not keeping an eye on me :p

My hairdresser cut his hair, he done alright but you could see that if he got a proper job done it would look better. If your gonna skip the hairdresser the best way to go is just shave it all can't be any messing up with the lengths then.
