It's been a while since I've done this so a little help0rz would be nice thanks :)

I got the wife a new S3 (£350) and now her old S1 is looking like a decent replacement for my 2nd phone. What's a good ROM?

Also, good sites for instructions on unlocking and rooting?

Ta.

This is the sub-forum on XDA-Developers for the Galaxy S.

And this is the ROM development sub-forum.

====================

First of all download CyanogenMod 10 for the GS.
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=galaxysmtd

Here are the instructions from CyanogenMod how to udate your phone.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide

Alternatively here is a series of instructions from one person on the forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31871397&postcount=3
- charge battery to 100 %
- remove Sim-card and External SD-card
- flash stock JW8 with Odin3 v1.87 (pit-512 and repartition)
- flash CF-Root JW4 v4.4
- shut down phone and enter CWM Recovery using the 3-button combo [YT vid here]
- in CWM Recovery do a wipe data factory reset
- in CWM Recovery mount all and format all (yes, best to format internal USB to)
- in CWM Recovery mount internal USB to PC and copy downloaded CM10 + Gapps
- flash CM10 nightly (phone will boot in CWM Recovery)
- do a wipe data factory reset again
- flash CM10 again + latest JB Gapps
- fix permissions in CWM and boot
- have fun!
Basically use both of those pages to get an idea of how to go about performing the update. For example, the CM wiki page doesn't tell you how to root your phone, but that guy's instructions do.

What about unlocking? Can that be done with a hack?

Unlocking is usually a feature of custom firmware, it was auto done when I flashed my San Fran to CM7.

OSF could be done with a software hack. Did it myself. Not sure it's the same for all phones though.

It usually can be done with just a hack or a code from a keygen for 99% of phones. CM10 is so fucking tempting though, if my phone supported it I would jump all over that shit! :D

Boot into download mode as you described, connect usb cable.

Simple!

For errors you need to post on xda they will help!

never bothered with heimdall. Simplest is to use CWM. The other way is via Odin.

Back EVERYTHING up - just in case - including the EFS framework, so if it goes tits up your phone will still work as a phone (K-Tool will back up your existing kernal + EFS settings). Also APN Back-up, SMS, Call logs etc. Best thing is do a Nandroid back-up from CWM. Factory reset. Flash CM10 + GoogleApps (if required). Reset dalvik cache, fix permissions, etc. May need to flash twice

Remember CM10 is extremely experimental. There WILL be bugs, and your battery may drain much quicker than normal.

Personally, I cba with them anymore. Stock does absolutely everything I want, everything works perfectly, and is fast and smooth. Battery lasts all day with Juice Defender installed.

The CM site is telliing me to use heimdall to install CWM in the first place. And that doesn't work.

Download Odin. Flash the latest Siyah kernal. You're phone will then been rooted and you'll have CWM.

Always seemed like far too much effort for very little end result to me.

Its fucking ace to be honest. BUT, the battery drains on idle. Will never get a day without charging.

Juicedefender is pretty good.

Check whats using your power tho. CM10 is generally pretty good for power usage. EG I had my phone on all weekend and neglecting to charge it had 40% juice this morning.

Thats bloody good. I need to charge my S2 at the end of each day.
I'm hoping the Galaxy Note 2's battery can make it through a day without screaming for power

Motorola are owned by Google now right?
I believe that's correct, I seem to remember reading that they bought them and everyone thought they were going to become the "nexus" producer and instead Google have basically asset stripped them.

Something will be draining it, preventing the phone from going into deep sleep. I have a similar issue with CM10 on my One X, the phone loses a mobile signal, following which it gets quite hot.
