CS keeps stopping my ADSL connection

Hi,

My PC has started to disconnect itself from the internet whenever I play Counter Strike. The wierd thing is that it doesn't do it immediately, but waits for anything from 6-20 mins before doing it.

If I don't play then I can keep my connection open all day.

When I exit CS the computer still says that the connections are open, but I can't open any websites, e-mail etc.

When I disconnect and try to reconnect the comp tries, but tells me that the server isn't responding, though if I reboot and try again I get in first time.

I have an Athlon 1900+ chip on an Abit KR7A 133 mobo, with 512Meg DDR and an alcatel frog modem. All drivers are up to date (I have only just rebuilt). I am using Win XP Pro. I also run Sygate Personal Firewall Pro.

This problem existed with 1.4 and still continues in the new version.

Any ideas please? It is very annoying

I'd say it's the firewall causing the problem. Try disabling it and see what happens.

I had a similar problem, and it was caused by zone alarm.

Wayhay, something I might know the answer to!

I had this problem and it was especially prevalent with ASE and Gamespy. If by frog modem you are using the SpeedTouch modem then in all likelihood your drivers are out of date. Download the latest 1.6 drivers for your modem from :

http://www.speedtouch.com/support.htm

This should fix it and no more worries :D

Brilliant, Tip Top, I've downloaded the new drivers and hopefully they will have sorted the problem. I'll test it thouroughly later :D

Thanks again.

silinder, I did wonder about the firewall. I used to use ZoneAlarm, and had no problems with it and Win 98se but had heard that there were issues with XP, which is why I am trialing the Sygate one. It seems pretty good so far I might even buy it!

A firewall is very secure,
Who mentioned BUYING
A company that created stuff to stop Hacking wouldnt create hacking program ? that defeats the object?

Ignore this guy. He's obviously not old enough to have online banking, a credit card, and personal folders, and legit software.

I recommend you all install Zonealarm, its free, and superb.

My father's machine was hacked, they got his email address, and those in his contact books, and submitted them to spam sites everywhere. Bloody annoying, I can tell you.

Thanks very much for the input, fragile, duely noted.

I am amazed that, despite reading several tech help forums, and advice from pc enthusiasts and professionals alike, you are the only person brave enough to tell it how it really is when it comes to firewalls.

On the other hand perhaps I should not be taking tech advice from someone who appears to believe that some software can enjoy the company of it's own kind, sexually speaking. I had never even considered the possibility of my programs being gay or straight, though as I have never judged the people I meet on this criteria, I don't see why I should start judging my software that way either.

BTW Tom, do you use WinXP? I know that ZA does work with it, but I have also heard that it is not problem free. I am using the Sygate product on the recomendation of one of the aforementioned PC pros, who also runs the same mobo as me. I know that it would be spending money I could almost certainly get away with, but for peace of mind I think I'll probably go with it any way.

Zone Alarm/Pro works fine with XP, I use it myself with no problems. You can disable ZAp from popping up alert messages when you get a udp packet or whatever... it just sits in the systray doing its thang.

I'm having one or two problems with zonealarm and my newly installed xp, but to my knowledge there is no 30 day trial on the free version. Also, hlguard or csguard don't actually try and access your computer to find cheats, that would be illegal.

Banks offer secure online banking, but read the smallprint and you'll find that they will take no responsibility from any security issues from your end. So if you had a trojan running on your computer, sending out information on your keypresses, in combination with the IE record, it would be fairly easy for a cracker to eventually work out your password and details.
