CS Crashing Just as I connect to server

OK I have overcome the WON authentication problem and occasionally I can get into a game. Most times though on attempting to join a server the following happens
I acheive WON authentication
Connects to server
as soon as it changes to say initializing and downloading it drops my dial up connection!!!

This is really driving me crazy. I have read so many forums and nobody has a solution

My system is P3 500, 128Mb Ram, Voodoo 3 3000
I am running in 3DFX Glide 800x600 and have tried 3DFX drivers and WickedGL drivers.
My ISP is BTInternet and my Modem is a 56K Connexant SoftK56
Please help out here cos I really wanna play

I had the same prob.
Just try to reconnect to the same server again, straight away, and it should load quicker thus not timing out........maybe.

Yeah my m8 is having that trouble too Bob,
getting just to iniatilzing and downloading and then disconnecting. Ecept his CS works and its TFC that he has the prob with. What happnens with ur tfc?

I don't know I dont play TFC yet. I have just started playing CS about a month now. I had been playing Tactical Ops and other UT mods but I have to say that when I do get a game CS is the best, just a shame it seems so unreliable at the moment.

Does nobody have any answers to this problem????

Its almost certainly your ISP or modem.

Try a reinstall of counter-strike and check all your dial up settings.
See if that works, once you have things setup ok then tell me and i will give u some tweak url's.

I have already performed a fresh reinstall of CS. I am not having this problem with any other online games so it seems unlikely to be a problem with the ISP or Modem. One suggestion I have had is that CS doesn't like Soft Modems. So I suppose that could be the problem. I just find it a bit strange that some of the time it connects fine and when it does I achieve a constant ping of around 200- 220 which I think is reasonable for a 56K modem.

Ping isnt everything, stability of connection is an issue as well. I really would get yourself a decent modem. I think the Pace 56k external (not USB) is the best, check for yourself at www.lagless.com

True CH3TAN, however I am waiting for Cable to arrive in my area and when it does the price of a good quality modem will pay for the 1st 3 months of my LPB heaven

I just don't get why it should be a modem problem when it only happens in CS and none of my other games.

my m8 fixed his a couple of weeks ago by reinstalling the game. if uv tried that im not sure what the prob could be, have u tried reinstalling halflife AND cs (the latest patch)?

If you are on the retail version are you sure you have all the levels, there is a level patch which gives all the levels!! Perhaps thats your problem!!

My modem is some SoftModem that came installed in the PC when I bought it. It uses a connexant chipset but i can't identify who makes it.

BUT i just ordered a new external modem so hopefully that will stabilise my connection and I can get on with a few games of CS!!!

BTW Wilier check out the www.lagless.com site. It has a list of recomended modems

I had a U.S. Robotics Fax 56k modem with NTL World...which was nice

Heh heh! it was definitly the Modem. Just got a Diamond SupaExpress 56e Pro (external). It seems to connect every time and my ping has dropped from 220+ to around 160-70
So now I can forget all this techie crap and get on with the game!
