Cs 1.4 ? What the Hell !

ok heres the deal updated my mod version from 1.3 to 1.4 and the hl1.1.0.8 to hl1.1.0.9

now when i boot up half life or Cs there is no sound in the menus and if i go to the console or try to connect to a game (goes to console as you know it cuts back to the desktop ,

Whats going on here , is there a solution ?
im dying to play !!

re install? (Full re install)

Uninstall CS, Install it, then apply the updates again, dont fotget to backup configs or whatever

re installed 1.3 , checked it , still had no sound and crashed out @ the console. then with no cs on it normal H L had no menu sound and crashed out at the console
any more ideas ?

should i get rid of everything and start clean and then install the stuff i have ?

or is there a fix for this problem ?

Reinstall HL from scratch, and then install FULL 1.4 and FULL 1.1.0.9

yeah i could but why are they so careless with they re updates ? ive talked to at least 50 other people with the same problem ,
