Spotted this over at badassmofo.com and thought I would post here. Basically it shows how 90%+ of locks on the market can be opened in seconds. One of the locks in the video is identical to the one on my front door, fucking disturbing to know that a burglar could enter undetected. :/

"Video removed for terms of use violation"

I'm guessing it's using a bump-key to open a Yale style lock?
Video of the principle here...
YouTube - Bumping principle

Another one here...
YouTube - Master Lock Company BumpStop Video

Jeros, you're right about circle locks like laptop and cycle locks. Some of the customers that I attend are freaked when I open a circle lock in 5 seconds. Hell, they're freaked that I can open most cash drawers in less than 30 seconds, without power and without a key. :)
(Before anyone wonders, I'm a till service engineer!)

At the end of the day, if someone wants to get into your property then they'll do it. If they break your door down, bump the lock or smash the window... they'll get in.

Stop living in cloud cuckoo land
Did you really think burglers found it hard to break into people's property BEFORE youtube?
Nothing's secure
Alarms are useless - they're all ignored
When did you last walk down a street, hear someone's alarm go off, and phone the police?
Doesn't matter if you've got double or triple glazing - all the modern plastics are easily yanked out of the frames with a crowbar
And locks? Pff forget about it. You might as well leave the door wide open for all the use they are

Well if they have to choose between a house with an alarm and a house without they will go for the one without.
And if you are getting an alarm install a silent one that is connected to a security company. If you move into an apartment building dont move into an apartment on the first 2 floors.

We have dog to protect our house.

better than any shitty alarm system or lock. Already proved his worth once by attacking a would be burglar. Neighbours say the burglar was screaming on the street with our dog trying to go for the jugular. Luckily for him the dog knows our next door neighbour well who managed to get Tyson off him. Police gave our dog a medal and everything! But if the dog could talk im sure he would have said "sod your stupid medal, if you incompetent fools did your job properly this burglar would have already been locked up and I could have had my afternoon nap in peace"

That's a nice story, however you are very very lucky you did not lose your dog.

Had the burglar been caught, and decided to sue, your dog would msot certainly have been put down.

I suppose it comes down to - would you rather have to claim on your home insurance for mostly replaceable things, or would you rather have your dog alive?

It's something I always wonder about dogs that are trained to guard, or protect their owners.

lol Marc you incorrectly named your dog, if he was a Tyson he'd of gone for the ear then raped him.

Also alarms don't tend to go walkies for the day with the house owners, so maybe both tbh, alarm to put the buggers off and dog to go for the juggler if the alarm fails.

Not if you have a notice up stating there is a dog on the premises. Dogs protect their territory and I've never heard of a dog being put down for biting a burgler in a property. In the street, that is a different matter altogether.

I'm sure a really determined burglar would have no hesitation about stamping on the head of a yapping poodle. Sure, they make a noise, but so does a burglar alarm and everyone including the police ignore alarms - they go off by accident all the time. Peter cries wolf. And even if they're tripped at a local police station, burglaries are so LOW on the list of police priorities, by the time they arrive the burglars have legged it with your stuff hours before. And the only dogs that deliver truly powerful bites are your pitpull varieties. Everything else just end up nipping with their front teeth

Our dog made a mess of him. Im not proud of that fact though. Im not sure wether he tried to sue or not but the only interaction we had with the police was having to give a statement and Tyson getting a medal

You reckon our Rottweiler only "nips"? You are more than welcome to come and see if you can subdue Tyson with a "stamp to the head" but id take tyson over you anyday.

I suppose if a burglar came tooled up it would be different though. I know plenty of people who have been robbed blind who have alarms so I will stick with my dog. Its weird, he must have a 6th sense or something because when we have left keys with plumbers, decorators etc, they have no problem, except for the dog wanting to play and lick their faces but when this burglar decided to break in, it was a different matter.

Most likely seen them with one of your family membrs, or you've been in contact with them and left a smell marker.

Good robber would get an excuse to visit the house, even briefly get in the door and the dog notices(and remembers) they're no threat.

Also "buddy by peer" works with dogs, so if some guy is your friend, this guy can come over with friends and they are all safe for the dog.

Depends on how territorial the dog is though, some only trust the master.

About dogs biting etc, it doesn't have to be a rottweiler to defend. Any medium to large sized dog will be a threat, take german shepards for instance. Family dogs, peaceful as fook, but push come to shove and they'll defend the family with last breath.

To stop a defending dog, you pretty much have to beat them to death or snap their neck and i would never underestimate a dog.

Regular dogs, well, "regular" as in trained for it but no rottweiler etc attackdog;

YouTube- police dog training. STRONG DOGS!!!

Part at 1 minute shows some nice power.
