Hiya

Any techies out there who can help please?

My laptop crashes to desktop two or three times an evening, it appears to be when we run into heavy traffic, i.e. a camped bridge for example.

The spec of my machine is:

Intel 2Core CPU
T7400 runnung at 2.16GHz
2GB Ram

Graphics card

ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 - 256MB Ram

I have run Driver Cleaner and installed the latest drivers, and installed Direct X 9C.

I have a MEM Manager running.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Ash

don't use catalyst 7.7 is buggy you would be better of with 7.6 but about your problems

have you done the following
defrag your hd
tested your FX card for artifacts (atitool will do this for you)
check for over heating
do a full file check (tick the box when launching)
done the check sum trick
do a scandisk
other than that try to keep the system cool you can get trays with fans built in

beg to differ mate cat 7.7 is stable but you need to remove the 7.6 drivers properly first,
Thast said the cat 7.7 actually reduce your performance not increase overall ut does increase performance in certain games (World in conflict for example, see the release notes for a full list).
So as thergador said you are better off with 7.6
Steps to installing a ati gfx driver
1) Uninstall driver via control panel
2) Use catalyst uninstaller to ensure clear removal
3) Boot up in safe mode and use a driver cleaner such as driver cleaner pro
4) Install new drivers

cant comment as i dont use x-fire :)
brave man going 2x2900's over a gtx/ultra ^^

Regarding the original poster, the laptop may be overheating, this will sound a little odd but what have you ot to use,
stick a book or something underneath so it is raised off the table (not blocking the holes for the air intakes) and see if it makes a difference

they for the next gen games ie dx10 which 2900 cant be beat on the 512mb got 3 times better result, yes i known the drivers arent what they should be but getting 300 fps in fear still isnt bad compared to the 8800 ultra getting 240fps
:)

most of the bad reviews of the 2900 are from the early drivers and the 2900 shines at rezz 1680x1250 + (with the extra ram of course it should mined)
edit hvaent found any reviews 7.8 cata driver not sure if its stable for vista 64bit?

no idea mate i sold on my x1950xtx and got a Geforce 8800 GTS 640Mb
And yeah your right the 2900 is a beast of a card, i personally just got the above as a go-between as i am waiting for the next gen when the dx10 cards have matured somewhat (and used the money from the 2900 to get a projector :X)
