Crap ping with ADSL

Sorry if this has been done before but here goes.

I have just become an lpb, or at least I thought I had. ADSL was installed 2 weeks ago, and the first time I did a refresh of my favourites all BW servers were between 30 and 70.

Since then it has got worse and worse, a refresh now show 100-200 on almost all servers, with in game ping fluctuating from 50 to 3 or 4 hundred. The other day it went over 1500, I thought those days were past.

Where does the problem lie? If I do a speed test here:

http://www1.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/speedtest50.html

I still get 497 kbps or 61 K/bytes per second, which suggests that the problem isn't my connection, but is it BW?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

its most likely your routing to BW.
either use neotrace or similar proggy, or use the DOS function tracert.
the line you want in dos is
tracert 213.221.174.38 >> bwtrace.txt
perplex has posted this reply several times, so you are posting the same stuff.
paste in your results, youll either find your being routed through america or something insane, or one of the hops has an unstable ping.

Thanks for those, I have downloaded Neotrace, what do I put in for my search target? One of the game servers?

Thanks

OK so I tried a couple of IP addresses in Neotrace, and the line heads off towards france and ends in a question mark.

Not sure what to do next. sorry.

that sort of answeres your question then.
your ISP is routing you through france, where one of the hops is completely whacked.
before you were proberbly still being routed through france, but with no problems. you could have had a lower ping.

who's your ISP?
try emailing them /contact their support, and if they dont reply then ring them up and explain that they're routing you to certain ISps through a dead hop.

Yeah soul, it's BT, I guess they're getting my £40 per month now, why should they give a fuck? I'm in for a year at least.:(

I'll see how it goes and give it a try, but I won't hold my breath.

Edit after closer reading of Soul's post ;)

My hg no is 11, can I change it? Do I need another password? I'd not really noticed it before. Sorry should have read what you wrote better the first time :D

You think you've got it bad, i've got cable and we are currently only receiving about half of our service. It will randomly cut off, which can be highly annoying when playing clan matchs.
If i ever find Mr. NTL, he's going to have to take the punishment he rightfully deserves.

Lo, what you need is a 14.99 dial up conection.....you know it makes sense.

By the way  is looking unlikely!

Add me to the list of BTO suxorz. Still pinging 500+, still complaining, and still nothing. Anybody else want £40 a month for doing f'all. In fact I think it'll be quicker if somebody could mail me screen shots of my next clan match, it least I stand a better chance of playing!

Me -> :twak: <- BT

Loads of BTO customers are complaining about these problems. I hope you get them sorted.

If you want to trace to BW, please use the address proxyscan.quakenet.org which is on the BW network. You can't actually trace to a game server itself because of filtering we've implemented on our network.

cheers,

Thanks for that address, natrat, that now makes more sense. I no longer have a line heading vaguely off towards france.

I am being routed through 15 nodes, but I have no idea if this is good or bad (complete noob to this kind of thing)

Any thoughts?

Thanks

ADSL sucks

ADSL sucks. If cable isnt available in your area you are better off spending your cash on drugs or women, or save up and move to an area with cable.

People have high aspirations for ADSL and are more often than not disappointed. Can anyone remember BT doing anything right????

I dont know why im bothering here because im a nice happy NTL cable modem user (lpb) and all you ADSL users (hpw) are frag bait, except for the slight problem that low ping doesnt improove my aim.

Anyway, :upyours:
