Been a long time since I upgraded*, tried playing doom3 on me old sys of 1.4 ath & gf3, lets not ask how ugly it looked to be playable**, so I've dug deep and bought a few new bits (AKA melting me plastic). Prob I've got is I'm not sure what to set the CPU freq multiplier and the CPU external freq to. ATM it's set at 10x multi and 133/33 is this right on a asus a7v600, amd xp3000 using pc3200 mem? Tried rtfm but v tired after work and a couple o beers and it makes no sense to me.

*new pc tbh :D

The XP3000 is actually 2.18GHz and comes in two flavours (333fsb and 400fsb).

Assuming it's the 333fsb one:

133x10 = 1.330GHz, which is effectively underclocking (quite a bit!).

If you're using 133MHz then you would use a 16x multiplier .
If you're using 166MHz (which you should be) then you would use a 13x multiplier.

Once you get it right you should see the cpu type appear correctly in the boot-time display.

I'm not familiar with the Asus board, but my Epox allows different frequencies and multipliers for CPU and Memory, I'd imagine that most recent boards would also.

Good luck!

To the best of my knowledge the XP3000+ only comes in 333fsb. Its the XP3200+ that comes in 400fsb.
Standard settings for XP3000+ are 333fsb x 13 multiplyer = 2.167 GHz.

(Taken from my motherboard manual, I have the XP3000+)

Thank you Gentlemen, now got it running at the correct speed :)

Just one other question what does the 33 refer to in 166/33 on external frequency?

I'd imagine it's the pci bus frequency (66MHz).

Like the fsb frequency, you double it to get a more recognisable reading (166x2 = 333 and 33 x 2 = 66).

Throddy, The XP3000 also comes in 400fsb flavour, though like you I have the 333fsb version.

Glad it's now sorted Gil

That said the 400FSB chip obviously couldn't run at 2.18Ghz ;)

later XP3000s do come in a 400 fsb but in the begining it is true that the XP3200 used to be the one.
