I still stick with the adage that it depends on the situation. If someones going to kill you then the survival instinct would kick in. If it doesn't, or you're missing that instinct entirely, then you're dead basically.

What was being suggested is that the 'survival instinct' isnt what we'd assume it is (eg, kill or be killed), its more survival of the species than of the individual. So in actual fact, the survival instinct would 'make' you not want to kill. Strange I know, whether its true or not is a different matter altogether.

From an evolutionary perspective 'the good of the species' is a load of bollocks on the whole. It's just better for most individuals if most individuals don't want to kill each other. Read about doves and hawks game theory.

Exactly. How could anyone possibly know whether they could kill somebody unless they've either been on the verge and chickened out or they actually went ahead and did it? I could sit here and say "yeah I'll kill any motherfucker that crosses my path" but it's bullshit because I don't believe I have it in me to do it.

It may well be a different story if I have a gun and there's some lunatic charging towards me with a weapon of some sort and I feel genuinely threatened, but I've never been in that situation (and touch wood I never will be) so it's impossible to predict an outcome.

As others have said "I don't know until I'm in a situation that demands it".

I do know that I get *VERY* angry about the idea of rapists, murderers and child-abusers (actually any abuse, so this includes wife/gf battering, oh yes and husband/bf battering too, let's not forget that women can do that too).

I also have a HELLISH temper on me if triggered, although I bottle things up 99.999...% of the time.

Combine those two things together and I can see myself just snapping and killing someone given the 'right' circumstances.

Whether I'd be able to do that in a 'conventional' war setting (i.e. where the other side aren't widely known to be insane religious zealots hellbent on killing), I don't know. After all, the 'other guy' could well be a conscript, or someone who joined up for the money, the girls, the travel, the experience. It's not the soldiers that decide to have awar after all, but the damned leaders/politicians.
