Cost of printer ink

The cost of ink-jet printer ink is outrageous. To re-fill my printer, its going to cost me about £65. I must have spent at least 5 times the value of the printer itself on ink cartridges.

They did a cost comparison recently of various liquids, like liquid gold, silver, and so on. Printer ink per litre was the most expensive. More expensive than liquid gold ! In the same survey, coke/pepsi was more expensive than petrol per litre.

They were just talking about this on the radio. There are loads of things that are ridiculously expensive for what they are.

Printer-ink takes the piss though.

Yep it is outrageous. I am looking at getting an Epson R220 at the moment, luckily I can get compatible cartridges for £6 a set but if I can't get that model then I will have to settle for some 3 colour shit printer with more expensive carts than the lovely 6 colour R220

You pay a set fee a month and get unlimited refills. There are a few of them around on the net from what I remember. Only certain printers are compatible with the offers tho in most cases.

If you buy a cheap printer you often only get 'sample' cartridges in it (i.e. half sized ones). Different manufacturers have different things in their cartridges too. Epson for example only put ink in the cartridges so they are cheaper, HP put the print heads in the cartridge so the cartridge is more expensive but your printer lasts longer because you replace the print heads every time you put a new cartridge in. If you want an expensive printer buy an HP, if you want a cheapo pikey printer get an Epson.

The price on the ink cartridges are one of the main reasons I would never buy one with ink, go laser printer imo.

All depends on how much you use really, and what quality printer you need.

But as a thumb of rule, run out = buy a new printer and don't whine

dont buy lexmark printers they make up for the low cost of the printer by charging the earth for the ink, as do some other companies.

look into refills andthird party cartridges.


i get some replacement cartridges from www.novatech.co.uk for my epson 6 colour @ 97pence a cartridge.

The printers here at work and onsite for the customer, they cost so much that its easier to buy a new printer each time than a new cartridge. The cost of keeping them is also harsh, I know of a case recently whereby a belt went in one of the printers - cost £1000 or more to get it fitted + Maintenance Kit. uke:

I went for the laser option. Sure, replacing the cartridge is expensive, but it does so many copies it works out to about 1p per page for mine (about £90 for the printer itself). Inkjets are a mugs game unless you hardly use them. I've seen refilled cartridges kill several printers, and using them invalidates warranties, so don't do it unless you can afford to lose the printer.

It's worth shopping around a bit and stocking up when they are on special offer. I print hundreds of pages a week on my inkjet and recently found Boots own brand cartridges to be cheapest and often on buy one get one half price.

i just went and bought a laser printer,
better quality and costs less in the long run if you buy a ink efficient one

but if you want to stick to inkjet, as said above its alot cheaper if you just get the cartriges refilled. Most printing places do it, note that you will loose some quality but you wont even notice unless you often do photo-prints

A3 colour printer here, not had to buy cartridges yet, but at least its individual inks which should be better - previous printer was a single inkwell....

8 cartridges....could be pricy....but the quality is the mutts nutts

If i need red ink i just kill a chav and siphon his blood into the cartridge. Gets a bit gloopy sometimes but 'eh' its free

pfft serves you right for being flashy gits, i have a cheap tesco lexmark thingy and it costs about a fiver to refill this babeh.
