Copyright Laws - Pending

I just found a book of recipies that's like a list of old recipies collected by the author I guess, but it has this odd copyright notice at the front so I'm wondering if they can't really copyright it because the recipies don't belong to them.

Does anyone know what it means in a book if it says Copyright Pending?

I mean obviously it means the copyright is pending obstensibly, but what on earth does it mean legally? Who prints a book and sticks copyright pending at the front?

i would imagine if they didnt get the copyrigghts from the original owner/person who holds the copyright then the book will have to be pulled from the shelfs, bit of a gamble tbh doing that.


its like patent pending on stuff, if the thing with the pending patent is found to have stuff that infinges other patents then it wont get a patent.

in plain english i'd say it means "lets pubish this book but we dont have everyones say so to do it, but we are doing it any way"

Collections of old recipes are a bit complicated though, because its often difficult to track down the estate of the (quite possibly) dead original author. In those cases where its a very old recipe and they have put a reasonable effort into tracking down controlling estates, they may proceed in the way they have if they are not quite sure about attribution and rights.
