Hello People,
My wife is complaining about the noise, I think it is the fan on the CPU, I stopped all the other fans while the machine was running and the noise went away. The noise tends to build gradually and can be reduced for a while if you give the cpu fan a quick pull before firing the machine up.
So my question, if you have managed to read this far, is this what type of cooler would be good for a P4 540 LGA775 cpu sitting in an Abit AS8 motherboard ?
I have tried a bit of googling and most of the cooling stuff appears to be for skt 478 prescotty type cpu's.

Thank you for any forthcoming help, my wife also thanks you. (she wants to be able to leave her comp running overnight to sell stuff in EQ2).

Sometimes I am glad my wife does not read these forums :)

And Catsby i will certainly look into replacing just the fan, but its the one that came with the CPU, a retail boxed 540, and I don't know enough about cooling matters to know if it is swappable with any old quieter one :)

Thanks,

Well I decided to go with new coolers, I bought two different types, this from thecoolingshop.co.uk and from here this odd looking thing . Two URLs for the second cooler as the shop website appears to be having some difficulty.

Both coolers are good, the coolermaster is slightly noisier, but was a little bit easier to fit. The Artic Cooler was slightly awkward to fit and needed two goes. With both of them you have a cooler cpu than with stock and a very noticeably quieter running computer.

Playing Everquest 2 which is a bit of a system hog I beleive, the cpu temp went from a steady 60 - 62 deg C to 53 to 57 deg C with both coolers.

I hope this is of some interest.
