Biggest flop of a smartphone launch in the past few years? I'd be surprised if anyone else did. Pretty much finished Palm off, and led to them being bought out. At least they avoided administration.

I've got a nokia e50 at the moment and works perfect.

I really don't use any joggyjoos on my phoine, or need to, so the more basic and less toucy the phohe is, the better.

Hm, why a flop? That thing works kinda great for me and I just love the keyboard cause what I hate is typing stuff on a display :<

Heard about Palm being bought by HP, but I don't know the reasons. Then again, HP has also bought 3Com, which is known for their good network products =) Such deals can often benefit both companies. Bigger market, less competition etc.

Its considered a flop because it did not get the market share it was expected too. It was meant to be a contender for both Android and the Iphone but it did not live up to that in sales terms. But i agree its a nice phone that suffered from lack of advertising.

I just wish more smartphones had different keyboard options. Far too many are just going for pure touchscreen as it's the easiest way and most popular.

The phone itself isn't a flop, it just didn't sell like it should have.

Still, you should've got a Desire instead. :p

I got a new sony ericsson something with touchscreen and everything. It worked great, but after I recharged it to full battery it wouldn't turn on. I should have bought a new Nokia instead..

Ah ye, might be that they had aimed for much higher sales =)

I just checked out the Desire and if it's the HTC you mean: I had an HTC XDA with WinMo before and it sucked big time. Missed calls were not showing up sometimes, the phone doesn't give out a warning when the battery gets low during a phonecall, typing was the horror and so was the auto-correct which could not be shut off. WinMo crashed multiple times during basic operations such as "having a phonecall", "shutting off the internet connection" or simply "checking active connections". The funny part was: After crashing you had to turn it on and off multiple times or it wouldn't be able to get a GSM connection :<

Overall I don't think I will ever buy an HTC again :flame:

that's down to windows mobile, not HTC. The desire uses Android, totally different platform, and one that was designed for phones, not designed for pdas and adapted.

lol I got a touchscreen samsung thingy and I bloody love it. I don't get Inet on it (I can but its too expensive) but it has an excellent camera, organiser (which I adore) and I only use it for txts and emergency phonings, though the calendar function is just wonderful.

I really wonder how you guys manage to type stuff on the screen :( I tried it on the iPhone and I had it on my old phone (with a bloody stick) and I couldn't get used to it :(

I use Swype.

So basically you just start touching the screen at the start of the word, go from letter to letter and then release the finger?

Sounds pretty interesting, but does it have enough words in the database and what if you want to switch languages?

For instance I start most messages with "hiho =) <name>" and then I either type French or German. Would it take over all my personal stuff from language to language and does it auto-recognize the language I'm gonna start using?

But it defo looks interesting.

Half of my family is French and I have friends in England =) I kinda need multi language support or I'm in deep trouble =)

I'm just interested in how Swype handles that =)

It has multiple language support, but you'd have to set the language.

While we're at it. What would a mobile internet flat-rate cost in the UK? In Germany I pay €8 as Student (with a bandwidth cap after 200MB)

data is fairly cheap on contracts, bundles on pay as you go or add on to contracts vary, Data is the next big selling point for networks, as the try to balance demand with the strain on their infrastructure and cost.

As an example, I pay £20 a month on o2 for 600 minutes to any network, unlimited texts and unlimited data with a fair use policy.

There are new networks popping up that offer data as their main selling point with unlimited data and no fair use policy, such as giff gaff.

on o2 I could get an add on for my data at £5 a month, if it was not already part of my contract. That's not capped like yours in Germany, and it's not a subsidised or discounted rate. It's subject to fair use, but everything is these days.

200mb is nothing on a modern smartphone, I usually use 600mb or more.

That's really cheap, tbh. As student I pay a total of 23€ for unlimited calls to fixed network and o2 and 150 (or 200, dunno) texts to any network. And well unlimited data, but with a bandwidth cap to EDGE after 200 MB.

Haven't had my mobile for that long, of course, so I can't tell about the data usage, yet =)

Btw, what is "fair use"? I tried to look it up, but couldn't find a translation :(

EDGE? Fucking hell, don't you guys have proper 3g and HSPDA? EDGE is awful.

fair use, means what it says, people who abuse the unlimited allowance get told to stop or risk getting it taken away. So for example some networks have a fair use policy of 500mb a month ( Orange and Vodafone) and then charge per mb after this limit. T-mobile and o2 will call you to ask you to lower your usage or risk cut off if they suspect you of tethering, but don't have enforcible limits as such.

"Unlimited data, subject to fair use policy".

It means "Use the data, but if we think you use it too much, we'll throttle your speed or charge you per MB".

I hate pure touchscreen phones. Best phone I ever had was a blackberry from work. I agree with the OP. Much prefer to have old fashioned clunky keys rather than a flat screen. But then again I go for utilitarian rather than a fashion statement. Ooo look at my phone, I can feed my dog from 5000 km away, download a million apps and use it as a spirit level. Pff. Mine's a phone and sends texts messages. Win.

Yeah I 've just upgraded from the best phone ever made , the N95, to the 5800
and I don't really like the touchscreen, I'm always getting things up I don't want
and scrolling through the contacts is just pure crap.
The GPS is very good though and my cracked Sygic satnav and viewranger work the dogs, still though I'm looking for a cheap N95 8GB, cos it's got a top screen you can see in the sunlight.
I'm waiting for a slider with a huge reflective screen, full qwerty and proper HD video recording, nothing around yet :(
