I think this is the right section for the thread, but sorry if its not.
Right so heres what im trying to do. Ive got a couple of movies on the PC which are AVI files. I want to put these onto a disk so i can watch them on my DVD player. However i didn't know that you could not put AVI files onto disk. Does anyone know what file type i will need to convert it to? If so, do you know any good free converters? Also what program should i use to put it onto disk? Just Windows Media Player?

Thanks in advance

Depending on your DVD player, you probably need to encode them as mpeg-2 format, although some players can handle divx encoded AVI files. This won't be the same as a normal DVD disc though, as if you put one in your PC and browse the drive, you'll find something like a TS_VIDEO folder, and a lot of .VOB files in it, which are the actual dvd files themselves.

Personally, I use the latest full copy of Nero, which includes an application (nero vision) which allows you to create DVD's from a variety of media files. It re-encodes the media files and creates the correct file/folder structure to allow you to burn it straight to disk.

Yes, it'll burn it to disc for you, and there's a whole bunch of other bits thrown is as well, and iirc they do a free 30-day trial.
