Are you in windows logged on? as in viewing My Computer displaying the C drive etc?

top 2 are the hard drives, 3rd is the cd rom.

Not neccesarily, The Primary and Secondary have both Master and Slave.

The Primary Master & Slave should be your 2 hard drives

The Secondary Primary & Master could be a CD Rom and DVD Rom drive iirc

lol i got an eye ache now the pc is working, i havent been able to access the HD i put in and its going wum wum wum but its still working so as long as i didnt blow it up im ok , ill have a look at the bios thingy again and see if i can turn anything on but short ofnsoemthing crawling through my pc this is the limit of what i can do lol.

erm... don't confuse her with saying the wrong words in a hurry...

Okay... The Primary IDE is one cable, and the Secondary IDE is one cable.
IDE is the connector type. Just a name, don't worry about it (atleast not now )

Each cable can connect two devices (harddrives or opticals like CD-rom and DVD-rom). A Master and a Slave.
So you end up with the possibility to connect 4 devices.
A Primary Master
A Primary Slave
A Secondary Master
A Secondary Slave

It is usefull to always connect the master device at the end of the cable. 99 out of 100 times it works properly the other way around aswell, but just to avoid the problems that one time...
So, your original harddrive (the one that was in the PC all along) should be set to Master, and connected to the end of the Primary cable.
Now comes the tricky part...

IF your CD-rom is connected to that same cable as your main harddrive, you set your old harddrive to Master, and connect it to the end connector of the Secondary IDE cable.

IF your CD-rom is connected to the OTHER cable as your main harddrive, you set your old harddrive to Slave, and connect it to the MIDDLE connector of the Primary IDE cable. (thesame cable as your original harddrive.)

So you will probably have your main harddrive to the lower left connector in the above scheme. If your optical is connected to the lower right, then your 2nd harddrive goes as slave to the middle left.
If your optical is connected to the middle left, you can connect your 2nd harddrive to the lower right as master.


PS that 15 head or 16 head setting can possibly screw some stuff up. That's _NOT_ the master/slave setting. It can limit your harddrive capacity or do some other funky stuff you really don't want.

im not entirely sure if youi got this sorted yet? but just incase its something really silly....on the big flat grey cable you plugged into the hdd (and i presume your new hdd as well) there should be a red line down one side of it...that red line should be closest to the red cable in the power plug ...red to red...

lol nm guys im going in to the tech lab at school on tuesday and my man dave is going to show me how tis done (good old dave he's great!)

the pc is working fine but there is no evidence that the HD i put in has been connected right so im just going to quit while im ahead cos you know what its like you end up "fixing" something and getting obsessive abut it then it blows up.
