connecting an old hard drive, ATTENTION TECCHIES!!

hullo,

spot of help needed please. I have the old hard drive from my x pc and need to install it in this one, I've made sure the jumper thingy is on the right bit to make it a slave, connected one of those flat grey wire things to it and one of thise leads with the big holes and the multi coloured wires coming out of it but it still isnt working.

if your really really good on pc's youll know exactly what im talking about, if not.. why are you in this thread shoo!!

anyway i think i did all the right things but maybe i missed something out because i was told that when i did this (or something similar) i would see the new drive when i opened "my computer" and t'aint there,

do any of you know of a web site with step by step instructions (preferably with reaaaaally simple pics to follow) that I can look at to get it right, I am not technically minded so any high tec talk needs to be accompanied with a translation, like an "installing secondary HD for dummies" or something?

stupid question. but u mentioned u made it a slave, u did connect it to a master drive to then right? and set that drive as master?

/edit: one problem could be that the cord that connects the 2 drives is damaged. hence not showing the other one.. thats usually the problem when it happens to me.

yes thats a good idea

doesent mean it will work tho. it may already be set as a master. but check anyway just to be safe.

Is it showing up in the BIOS screen? are the disks set to AUTO (detect) in BIOS?

If its showing up ok there, but not in your OS (XP?), go into computer management and assign it a drive letter.

If its not showing up in BIOS, try it on the secondary IDE cable, set as master, and check BIOS again.

Oh Ez, when you connect it all, go into the BIOS (press DEL when you start machine) and within the options you will see your Bootable Devices, no not Beautiful Devices dammit! If its detected you will see it as the Slave iirc

Just to clarify something,

Is it true you can just remove the Jumper from the Slave Hard Drive if your missing the sticker indicating where it should be?

far fetched, but can it be a IRQ error? i know i had that problem (or simmilar) with one of my old drives that made it impossible to use on my newer PC....

should show up in system manager then i think.....

whats a bios? right i set the other jumper to master (there were two options a 15 head and a 16 head, i dont know what heads are but it was in position for the 15 head one anyway so i changed it to 16... this made no change what so ever lol

The BIOS is a place where the geeks go for parties...

start your machine, it will say a load of gobble-dee-gook but you'll see the RAM being detected, the number will rapidly start climbing to however much you have. Look at the bottom of the screen and it'll say Press DEL to enter Setup.

if you go in here you have a load of options. The one you want is Boot devices. Have a look round and see what you find. DONT change anything without asking here first.

to exit you will be asked if you want to savre your settings, just say NO

Look on the harddrive, the jumper settings should be there (image) make sure it's set.

Make sure the secondary IDE cable (floppy thing) is plugged into the harddrive then that's plugged into the motherboard (if there's a spare slot). If not, use the spare cable heading (Hell, remove it from the floppy drive if you need to) and plug it into the 2nd HDD.


Actually had to do this yesterday, took less than 2 minutes. still can't explain it properly -_-

i do wonder what u really did there.. the master/slave jumpers should only have 6 pins in them... 2 rows a 3 or 4 pins.

Bios is basically an interface with your system, could be that your system isnt set up to look for another harddrive so thats why it isnt picking it up, might just need to turn it on, usually pretty easy, though the specifics can vary depending on the system, when u start up the system, at the 1st screen u press del or f2 (can vary depening on the system, though if u look in one of the corners of the screen sometimes tells u, will say something like, 'press del to enter system setup', once you are in, look for a heading like drives, and find the primary slave (should be the drive ur looking for), then change it to on or auto, depending on the system if unsure how to navigate, there are usually basic instructions at the bottom of the screen,

what system are you using (make anyway, model if possible), the button to enter the bios can sometimes vary, a lot use del, i know dells use f2

righty ho i did it and went to the boot menu thingy and it said this

quick boot mode = enabled
boot up num lock - on
boot to os/2 = on
boot from net work = disabled

i have no idea what make model it is i did say im not a tech lol.. its gray if that helps?

It can be confusing to know how to set the jumpers just from looking at the label. As you read across the left-hand and right-hand pictures, you'll notice that a setting for "DEVICE 0 (MASTER)" appears twice. Same for "DEVICE 1 (SLAVE)". But the first mention applies to "16 HEADS" and the second mention applies to "32GB Clip". The Deskstar 120GXP Jumper Description does a good job of clearing up the confusion, so rather than repeat it here I'll just strongly recommend you give it a look.

go though the different options in bios, ur looking for something like primary drive1, or primary slave, and u need to switch these either on or auto, (is probably currently on off), it will probably have 'drive' in its heading

BIOS: Basic Input Output System.

Brain of your computer, everything is controlled there. Core temps/Fan speeds/CPU speeds etc. Also where you look to see if HDDs/CDs/Floopies are detected. No point touching it, since most info you'll need will show as soon as the machine is turned on

Read what I said, it's a matter of making sure the jumpers are in the right place and that the cables are correctly added. No faffing around in the BIOS needed.
